Just shot a buddy's Edge today and WOW! I'd seen photos of them before, saw the videos, heard about them... but none of those things really do it justice after seeing and shooting it today.
Due to fading light we didn't have a lot of time to shoot, so we quickly found a rock about six inches in diameter, 450 yards out (not even getting started for the Edge), dialed in the scope and got behind it. He was spotting, got ready to shoot, touched the trigger - thing goes off almost unexpectedly, and nailed it.
Think the group that was sent with the rifle measured 0.117 inches @ 100 yards.
They're big, they're heavy, but damn they're accurate. Have seen the long range groups (and once again 450 isn't long for these) and I'm very impressed with these rifles.
Think his loads are 2775fps with the big 300gr bullet. What also surprised me was the very light recoil and very little felt muzzle blast, even with the brake. Would be stupid without ear protection, but I've only shot once in the past 13 years without protection.
Cool caliber I just recently picked up one. It's built on a Lawton 7500 action,Lawerence 30 in barrel with Lawton break, lone wolf stock, jewel trigger.lawton 20 moa base, zeiss 6.5-20x50 with turrets, awesome accuracy out of these things.shoots 1 ragged hole at 200 yrds, running a 300 gr sierra matchking at 2850 fps. When you getting one built?? Grin
Havent had a chance to shoot it yet since ive been away from home at school. Maybe ill get out this coming week over spring break and see if i can hit some gophers way out there! My younger brother also has a 338 Lapua being built right now.
Proverbs 12:27 The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.
not much of an advantage over a 338 rum. more expensive dies, more powder, and not too much of a gain. i'll stick with running a 250 grain at just over 3k. if i wanted to make an edge, i'll just sink a 338 rum, iirc, .094 deeper and viola !
I just got the bbl in and got a 338RUM reamer from PTG at a special Shot Show price I couldnt pass up, now all I need is a decision on which action I root out of the spares box. I thought about all three chamberings and decided to keep it economical as possible. Muzzle brake is still on the drawing board, and stock selection is gonna take some thinking on. Got the optics from JBB111 (NSX3.5x15) at a real fair price, steel rings and a 20min base and some spare time and I will have it done just in time for the mirage season here in the desert... LOoking forward to it.
Ive tinkered with the Lapua for a friend and its an awsome piece, just kinda put off by the brass cost. This should be a fun project..
So far, just throwing ideas around... 700 SPS SS SA donor #4 Lilja, straight fluted, 24" thinking maybe a McM Classic Edge (lightweight) One of the WSMs possibly, maybe something else entirely
And try to balance lightweight with excellent accuracy, kind of a contradiction, I know.
Have been checking around and looks like it can be done around $2200 (SPS SS being $550).
Sound somewhat reasonable of a combo or really way off from those with experience?
