I'm thinking about having a .280 Rem reamed to .280 AI. What ball-park price should I expect to pay for this work?

I'm thinking you'll pay more like $150-$250 to do it right.
To do an AI correctly the barrel must be removed, the shoulder set back a full turn while making sure the stamping and extractor cut if present still index correctly, and then reamed and reinstalled. Stamping the barrel with the AI should also be done. I don't see how it should be any less expensive than a complete rebarrel. In some ways it's more complicated than a rebarrel.
Some folks may do it without it but a proper and true AI needs to have the barrel set back.
Maybe a Professional Gunsmith can chime in on this, am I way off base?

Paul, are you a 'smith?
How can you set a barrel back and ream to AI and still make a profit charging $100?
You must be well set up and very efficient.
Good for all of us if that is all it costs.
Thanks.

Apparently I do.
All of the steps I detailed still need to get done but the good 'smiths must be really fast or they work cheap.

Here a deal from Mike Bryant in Tx on rechambering Re-chambering: Pricing depends upon what has to be done: $125 is for rechambering with no threading work. I won't rechamber a factory barrel to a chambering that may or may not clean up with my reamer. For instance, a factory chambering to an Ackley Improved may or may not work depending upon the diameters of your chamber compared to the diameters of my reamer. From $125.00 to chambering rates. http://www.bryantcustom.com/pricelis.htm

Maybe I'm dumb but if you're just shaving off the walls and flattening out the shoulder, why would you need to set the barrel back? I can see where it wouldn't work if the chamber was larger than the reamer but...........?
Aim for the exit hole.

Because a true AI chamber has a headspace dimension .004" SHORTER than the parent case.

Sure wish one of our respected resident gunsmiths would chime in here. Bea, Redneck, MColeman......anyone?

About $100, but I try to chime in on things I have actual experience with. YMMV

Me too. Except in having to pay someone else to do it for me.
I do my own.
