I just place an order with Midsouth for a small $4.00 item so to avoid the $3.00 charge on orders of less than $20.00 I also ordered a box of Federal Premium Heaveyweight 3 1/2" #5 shot turkey loads....thought I was getting a box of 10 shells but only a bitty box of 5 shells arrived....this stuff better shoot lights out for that price and better pattern with only 1 shot! http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=00129PHT191F5

Makes me wonder how many turkeys were killed with plain 12ga 2 3/4" #6s before those high dollar turkey loads got invented

I use regular copper plated Fed and Winchester ammo usually if I had read it was 5 shells I still wouldn't be trying these

To expensive for the little bit of gain over the Win Supreme and not worth the price in my opinion
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Mike +1 on that. Back in the 60's, before screw in chokes, unless you were a duck hunter, just about everyone carried a 12 gauge with a 2 3/4 inch chamber and a modified choke and hunted everything with it. Killed turkeys just fine. Well, it's way past the 90's now, LMAO but we're still using 2 3/4 inch shells for turkeys and they still seem to be killing them just fine. We're using this shell from Federal, shot size #5: http://www.natchezss.com/brand.cfm?...mp;prodTitle=Federal%2012%20ga%202%203/4Comes to about 50 cents a shell, shipped right to your door. My son has a Winchester 1300 with a 3 inch chamber, and still prefers these shells. With an HS Strut Undertaker Choke, .665 constriction, he can consistently put 13 to 16 pellets in the head and neck of a turkey target at 50 yards, and the gobbler he shot last spring never knew what hit him.

You had better not order any Nitro's then, 68.95 for A box of 10.

I always shoot three - five shots for patterning purposes. You can get some quirky results when patterning with some odd high and low counts on occasional targets. I shoot tungsten loads also (Hevi-13) and the price of this genre of shell is a choker for sure.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

I use the exact same shells I shoot pheasants with. I see no reason to change.

Don't be surprised if you don't get high counts with them. The shot is very dense and will not have very many pellets in #5. That said, they will hold patterns further than less dense shot. FI, you may get 120 in the 10 at 40 with lead 5s, but may only have 50-60 in the 10 at 50. With the HW you may only get 110 at 40, but may still have around 80 at 50.
I would have went with 7s in HW, or 8s if they made them. HW pellets are going to perform like lead 4 times larger. 5s and 6s are overkill big time with HW, but they will have amazing energy at long range.
Good Luck

The best load I've found is the Winchester Supreme 2-3/4" 1-5/8oz #6's @1,250fps. Bought them to use in an old Remington 1910 pump I got a few years back. They patterned better than my regular turkey rig and its preferred load; Winchester 3" HV #5's.
I tried the 2-3/4" loads in the turkey rig and got, by far, the best patterns I've ever shot, and I've shot just about every 3" copper plated shot load commercially available.
The Supreme 2-3/4" are more expensive than the common 3" loads, at about $12 per box of 10, but in my gun they produce patterns on par with what I have seen from the more expensive "heavier than lead" loads.

I run #5 Win Supremes and #5 Federal Premiums and they shoot great patterns...don't really know what brain fart made me even try and get these ...figured I try some thing new but again thought I was getting 10 shells...have killed birds at over 50 yds with what I have been using although I general shoot 30yds and in unless hunting a field set up and a bird hangs up

I shoot High Dollar shells, they work. Do they work better than cheaper shells?, not at 30 and even 40 yards when all things are right - but then again, having all things right rarely happens with me so I want that little extra bit of pop, coverage and reach.
Enjoying Each Sunrise...

Not a chance in Hell I would need to use $7/shot, rounds on a friggin bird. That is laughable. I don't see the big deal. When you consider all my other hunting expenses that's no big deal. Heck I spend waaaay more on gas every turkey season. And these denser than lead shells are just hell and gone superior to lead. Sorry there's just no contest. They pattern better, they penetrate better, are lethal at longer ranges. My current shell of choice is putting about 240 pellets inside a 10 inch circle at 40 yards and still keeping 130's inside a 10 inch circle at 50 yards. What that means is that when I put the bead on ones head at 50 yards, I'm not spraying and praying. I'm not taking an unethical risk. I'm 100% certain that he's dead meat. Besides it's not like I'm taking these things on a dove shoot. The limit for turkeys in Alabama is 5 a year. And I'll gladly pay 7 bucks apiece for 5 turkeys.

Well, I get 1 maybe 2 turkeys a spring.
When they're dead as hell from a 20ga throwing #5 shot at 30-40 yds, I see no reason to change. I don't need 10 shot in my pattern at 50-60 yards when there's no way I'm shooting that far anyway.

Really no reason to spend anymore than you have to and lead 4's,5's,or 6's with a half way decent choke all get the job done when used within sporting ranges.
