he 300 win mag with a good 200gr bullet like nosler partition or swift a frame can brake both shulder of a moose then y do people get 338 win mag not just for moose but bear also. With the 300 win mag u can buy cheep ammo for just 20$ to practice but with the 338 win mag it gows as much as 40$ for non premium bullet. if i reload my own bullet how much wuld it cost me for cheep practice bullets?

Buy a .30 cal Mag and be done with it. If you hand load, or if you don't, it'll still give you all the versatility you need.

I'm thinking the reloading bench might be a very dangerous place for you to be.....

Col Cooper had something: .30 cal for most of it and .458 for the rest. Makes a strong statement.

If I was to pick one cartridge for everything in N.A the 300 Win mag would be it.

10 years ago I'd have voted for the 300WM as a NA "all around" rifle. Now, I'd go for the 300 short mag. Never owned either, but have shot the 300WM a bunch, and once upon a time owned and hunted with a 300 Norma Mag- a virtual clone to the 300 WM. The 300 shorty seems to be a close match to the WM or Norma.

Lost the Norma (built on an '03-A3 action) in a fire, or I'd probably still be hunting with it - heavy, but what a shooter!

I now hunt- up in that range- with either an '06, or a .338WM - both Ruger 77OM. The .338 is actually more pleasant to shoot across the bench as it sports a couple extra pounds, Mag-Na-Port, and about 5 inches more barrel, but I carry the '06 more, with it's 17 inch barrel, and a stock slimmed and trimmed basically into carbine mode.

I'd push my '06 to 400 yards with known range, and the .338 to 500, also with known range. In the more than 20 years I've hunted with both, the longest shots taken with each were a one-shot kill at 356 long, alpine, downhill paces on a caribou with the '06, 180 gr factory and about 200 yards with the .338 -also on caribou (2 with two rounds) - with 250 grain hand loads. Either is a good "all around" cartridge - the 300 Mag, in whatever configuration, fits nicely in between them, especially with premium bullets for the big stuff.

300 Win or the 300 WSM,,,either one! Given the same barrel length, the 300 WSM only lags behind on average 50 fps in all bullet weights.......A wash! Yogi or Bullwinkle won`t know the difference.

If I were you, it`s better to find the BEST RIFLE chambered in either, that will feel and work the best for you!

luiss,

Your argument is great except it doesn't include the human factor of Felt Recoil. Because of that I recommend starting out with a milder cartridge.

This is not to take away anything from the killing ability of a 200 grain Nosler Partition going faster than 2700 fps as a killing almost everthing proposal.

I get high penetration with the 300 WSM, using the 200 gr Barnes. I load to a mild 2750 fps. I use 60 gr. of H4350, it beats .375 270 gr.X bullets in penetrating end grain spruce.

wildone,

Help me out here. I'm not familiar with Quebec. Is this a cultural misunderstanding?

Yup, ESL is likely... They speak French mostly...
