My Dad has an original 1895 in 30-40 Krag that has a nice functioning action, refitted forearm, and very pitted barrel. I've heard that all 1895 actions were the same action and was wondering if this rifle could be refitted with a new barrel into a .405 Winchester? I know Doug Turnbull's name as a great rifle restorer but his prices are beyond my interest. Does anyone know of someone else who does what I'm wanting?
Thanks!

If the rifle were mine, I would have Randall Redman rebore/rechamber it to .405. It would be significantly less expensive than a Turnbull rebarrel.

Agree with gunwizard. Jim Dubell would do a fine job as well.

He said it was severly pitted. Thats why he wants a "new" barrel.
Any good gunsmith that fits barrels should be able to do that for you, and I believe there are barrel makers who will custom contour their barrel to the exact shape of your old barrel.
And Yes, Jim Dubell could put on a new barrel for you.

Since it is a 30-40, there may be enough metal to rebore to a 405. Who knows?
Everything you now do is something you have chosen to do. Some people don't want to believe that. But if you're over age twenty-one, your life is what you're making of it. To change your life, you need to change your priorities.

I had Jesse Ocumpaugh rebore a 30-30 Savage 99 to 38-55 and he did an excellent job at a very reasonable price. He will also rebore a Win 95 to 405. His website is: http://www.35caliber.com/index.html

The pitting will be drilled out to the .411 diameter for the .405 Win,all clean and shiny! No worries about duplicating a barrel for the fore-arm to fit, remark the barrel, sights are right and you're ready to go.....

You can rebore a 30-40 to a .405 without any problem..or you can simple rebarrel it, either one will work..I would prefer the rebore myself..rebores still maintain a bit of collector value of sorts..
