Just picked up a 700 SPS SS in 270 Winchester to replace the 300WSM M70 EW. Wanted something smaller that my nephew could use comfortably and this should fit just fine.
Topping it with a VX3 3.5-10x40 CDS in Talley LWs and grabbed some Hornady Superperformance 140 SSTs to see how it does. Will probably go with a slower 130 for him, but for me I'm curious how these will perform.
Hope to get it to a range soon and will post some pics. Was really considering an XBolt, but at $400 less, I couldn't pass this up.
Mainly for deer and an occasional elk

The Superformance .308 178 load impressed me a goodly bit. I think you'll be equally so.

Your nephew will appreciate the kindness of the .270 vs. the 300 WSM. A buddy of mine at work has the same rifle/caliber you just picked up.
It shot so, so. He went and had it bedded and the Bbl. floated. Some folks said it wouldn't help because of the synthetic stock that comes with these rifles.
Well, they were wrong, because it worked on this one. It shot sub inch groups with 2 factory loads we tried.
Good luck and let us know how it shoots.

Tony I am shocked you didn't go Winchester?
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer or elk but how he hunted it.

Have only had one Winny... and got a great deal on the SPS. Was open to other options, but money talked and can customize later if I go that route.
And I hope this thing shoots sub MOA out of the box, won't be too pleased with it if it doesn't. Anyone know the best deal on some Talley extra lows?

Once I get some Talleys I'll see how it does. Have them ordered through the Campfire, just have to wait. Any good loads you've found so far?
Where do you normally shoot?

The extra lows are just that... not a whole lot of clearance, but enough to not touch. I like it though Think I'll try and clear out the barrel channel and free float it. May drop it in a B&C Medalist (just can't justify spending $500 on a McM), flute the bolt and have it bedded.

The extra lows are just that... not a whole lot of clearance, but enough to not touch. It's probably gonna "touch" every time you shoot it. Maybe kinda hard, too. Could be a problem down the road. Great looking rig, though. Still, I'd have to have a little more clearance for that very nice scope.

I am wondering how much this will have to move to "touch"... looks like a 1/16th clearance at least..

There is a tiny bit more clearance that what it looks like in the photo plus I moved it forward a hair this morning, giving more clearance in the front. Hopefully it won't be an issue.

Not trying to rain on your parade, Tony. That is really a nice looking rig in a great caliber. I tried to use super lows with a 40mm vari x 11 in 3x9 on an '06 Fwt and ended up with a dent in the scope bottom. I would suppose you would not want that for your new rig. Hope that doesn't happen and all your groups are sub moa!

Looks good Tony. Flute the bolt, skeletonize the handle, new knob, you'll be loggin'... If your worried about the e-lows, I have some silver Talley lows I'll trade ya? Let me know. Later
Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
Ain’t easy havin pals.

Those damn SPSs must have a ton of upward pressure on the barrel. Spent about 20 minutes with some sand paper smoothing down the bumps at the end of the barrel channel and it was still touching. Kept at it, sanding it down more, still touching. Finally got it so I can slide a $ between the stock and barrel.
Tuned the trigger to 3lbs, feels good with no creep.
Shot three rounds yesterday, didn't have time or the right place to really do some shooting, but have it hitting center at 25 yards. Should be pretty close for 100 when I get around to it. Unless floating it is going to have me way off from where it was yesterday. Oh well...
I do like the gentle recoil compared to the 300WSM. Not an accuracy issue, is just more fun to shoot.

We should hook up and shoot over at tri-county. I have an M70 in 270 and still have that M700 300 WM for now. I haven't gotten into the Talleys yet. I've been happy with the Leupold Dual Dovetails for now. They are heavier and a pain to put together though. Getting them square takes some patience.
