Prayers on the way. My grandfather and his brothers all worked in the WV mines following WWII. My grandpa's youngest brother was killed in a cave in in 1957.

When I got out of college,my first job was a geologist in a coal
mine in Redstone Co .The name of the mine was Mid- Continent #5
was on day shift, one night after my shift, the miners put
raincoats over their sniffers on the continues miner. The
sniffer would shut down every thing in mine electric, About
6:00am the mine blew up. Being one of the first in the mine
as a trained mine rescuer was a sight I'll never forget.
Lost 13 men that night.

Why did the miners put raincoats over their sniffers Charlie?

Treehuggers are responsible for the deaths of miners by their protesting of mountain topping.

Mining is hideously dangerous, no matter how you do it.

Tree huggers like myself who resent corporations from Richmond coming into the state and blowing it all to hell. I proudly stand with those who seek to outlaw this disgraceful method of coal extraction.

My dad was a WV coal miner, it killed him indirectly. Most of my uncles worked in the mines at one time or another and my grandfather did too at some point. I'm sure there were a couple more generations back that did it too. Most of the kids I knew and hung with had family that were miners. Some of them disabled due to mine accidents.

I made up my mind years ago as a kid that you'd never get me into one of those black holes. I've since learned there isn't enough money to convince me to commercial fish in the Bering Sea either.
I prefer to take my chances against criminals.

Cover the detectors so the equipment wouldn't shut down. the sniffers detect methane gas and when detected shut it off. Instead of taking time and ventilating it properly some idiots will cover them with plastic or whatever is handy an dkeep on working

First off, thoughts and prayers fro those involved.
Secondly, when I was a kid, we had a rather sizeable number of farmers who had a hook in place of one of their hands courtesy of removing the shields on corn pickers so as to be able to clear jams more quickly.

Tragic and sad event.

Another vote for nuclear power, how many deaths do we need from coal to change the way think? I wonder how much the coal lobby spends on scare tactics about nuclear power while thousands of miners suffer from the side effects of mining.

Prayers sent. Both Grandfathers worked in Coal mines in PA and WV
Coal is used to power most of the country. People in the cities do not realize this.

Not a pretty industry but a necessity

I am a coal miner in western colorado and my heart goes out to the families of the miners in this explosion. Both of my grandfathers were in the mines as was one of my great grandfathers, and one uncle. So I guess you could say that it is in my blood. May god bless those that paid the ultimate price to make a living for the ones that they love in this stressed economy. Believe me, if i could make as well of a living for my family doing something else i would be their in a heartbeat. But in this area there is nothing else that even comes close to coal mines pay for the amount of people that the mines here employ.

I could never ever work in a coal mine. My grandfather worked in one briefly during the depression and he couldn't handle it, so he quit, even though jobs were hard to get.

My grandmother's side of the family is from Raleigh County, Beckley WVa....Still have a lot of relative who live there, and mine coal.

Prayers out to the families who have lost loved ones. I haven't heard that it was any relatives of mine, thank God.

West Virginia coal miner here. Most of my family and friends are miners as well. My Dad, Brother, Grandpa, Great Grandpa and several Uncles were as well. I have been doing this (underground, highwall, and surface)since I was 18 and I will be 40 this August.

Seafire I live about 30 miles from Beckley. I know a lot of people that work at that mine and unfortunately more than one who passed in the explosion. Coal mining aint for everyone... however most of the guys who do it love it and know the risks. Many thoughts and prayers to those guys and their families.

Underground mining is dangerous as anyone should realize. Mining in West Virginia would be much safer IMHO if Don Blankenship, the CEO of Massey Energy, went missing in one of his mines.

Heard on the radio today that the Obama admin will be looking at some $300,000 in Massey Energy donations to various Republican candidates campaigns over the last 20 YEARS has anything to do with conditions. MAN they are stretching.
