It actually reads as if they were packing heat, but just didn't want to kill the moose. The article does mention "warning shots".

Maybe they figured more people would be able to convince the moose to leave? Or were afraid of lower-48 type paperwork for a DLP shooting?

I love this place. That area is just down the road from me. I know we have aggressive brown bears on the Kenai, but a ticked off moose can kill you just as fast and easy. Those 2 Ohio guys came to Alaska for an adventure, sounds like they got it! They have a great story to tell back home. I hope they continued on to the cabin.
