I was about to tell you the story about how I traded a microwave for KYHillChick, and then I realized the topic was about and old winch. Duh! Sorry. Nevermind.

Warn 8274. Don't build them like that no more.Dam good winch Partsman. Model 5687, they both come with 150' of 5/16" cable which I like. Thought about trying the synthetic rope that some seem to like. This is a pic of the 8274

If thats an 8274 its ANCIENT. I have an 8274 on my Jeep thats probably 30 years old and other than the upright design it doesn't look much like the one you bought.
My 8274 is virtually identical to the one you posted from the Warn ad.
The problem with synthetic rope is its expense. To put 150' on your winch is going to cost probably $400. Shorter 100' sections are over $300.
If you can afford it synthetic is awesome. Its 1/7th the weight of cable,it floats, and doesn't fray and run slivers of cable into your hand. It doesn't stretch like cable either,so you don't have any recoil if it snaps under tension. It just falls to the ground.

Partsman; The older worm gear driven Warns are very well thought of in my neck of the province. I've had two of the planetary Warns, a 6000 and a 8000 which both worked well, but the upright ones hold more line and I believe are capable of faster line speed as well. After years, I tore my 8000lb apart to made sure the gears were still well lubed and everything looked happy inside, which it did. Warns make a fine product in my experience and as 7STW said, they don't seem to make them like that anymore, so nice find. Have a good weekend Partsman. Regards, Dwayne

Partsman; If you give me a shout first and care to get up to Tickleberry's in OK Falls some evening for ice cream, I'm buying, OK?
If you PM before you come this way I'll give you my cell number.
