Federal judge rules Day of Prayer unconstitutional Email this Story
Apr 15, 3:45 PM (ET)
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A federal judge in Wisconsin says the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb issued the ruling Thursday in a lawsuit filed by the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation.
The atheists and agnostics group brought the lawsuit against former President George W. Bush's administration. It argued the day violates the separation of church and state.
Congress established the day in 1952. In 1988, it set the first Thursday in May as the day for presidents to issue proclamations asking Americans to pray.
President Barack Obama issued a proclamation last year but didn't hold public events with religious leaders as Bush had done.
A message was left for the U.S. Department of Justice, which represented the government in the case.
Back in the heartland, Thank God!

So what exactly is the tort there? I would say that the President, as a citizen still has the protection of the 1st amendment so if he wants to ask others to pray - it's his right.
No one forces you to comply. That would be something different I think.

Jefferson was against a national day of prayer. Guess he was in line with the court. Why do we need a national day of prayer anyway?

If Ignorance is bliss, then why aren't there more happy people If The gun was in the hands of the victim, there would be no murders, robberies or rapes.

What is being prayed to? Christians should be interested in that one.

As an atheist I could care less, have a 'rub blue mud in yer bellybutton' day if you must.
A government is the most dangerous threat to mans rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.

That judge will be overruled. His is an idiot. The only thing that is in the constiution is that the governmant shall not establish a religion. As long as they don't tell ya who to pray or that you have to, it does not matter.

As an Apathetic Agnostic I couldn't give a hot turtle's fart either way. Do you really think that ruling will eliminate prayer anywhere?

My biggest gripe is the feigned interest in Christianity during election times or times of strife since the USA was explicitly not formed in any way, shape, form, nor fashion as a Christian country. If that false ad campaign can be stopped that would be a very good thing.

I'm a Canadian - most people up here are atheists - or close to it, these days, anyways - so I could care less... Why not proclaim a national "belly button lint collecting day"? Doing so, would have the same net effect on the world.

As for me I can pray every day and do, no one can stop me. I do not pray outloud or make anyone listen. What's between me and god is no concerne of others. My only question is why do we have gay pride days and MLK day and all the other day's that are of no use and have no effect on the people of this country and no one objects. I think preyer scares people, ask yourself why? just my opinion.
