I have a chance to buy an 1899 model c, but have some questions.

It has a pistol grip stock with checkering. The fore stock also has checkering. Perch belly with 1/2 round, half octagon barrel, 38 55 caliber.

All the 5 digit serial numbers match! It was made in 1904. Condition is excellent.

Since these rifles came with a straight stock and no checkering, could this be a special order? No time for a letter as I must act before I could receive it!

Thanks guys...........

In my mind it would be special order. Please lost a pict or two when you purchase it. If you decide to pass on the rifle please PM me the details as I would be interested.
Thanks Chris

Likely would have the S shaped Marlin style grip cap, wouldn't it John?

Certainly could be original and special order. Pictures would be a help but go with your impression of the gun as to original or refinished condition. Price not mentioned so it may be up to your wallet.

If the numbers match and it has a curved bottom on the pistol grip, the it sounds right. Would need to see pics of the checkering to know for sure if that was factory, but I'm guessing it is.

1899C in 38-55 with special order p/g and checkering? You dog....

Here's a pic of Birddog's 1899CD from savagela.org.. checkering may differ, but rest should look similar.

That would be a really nice find if the wood checks out OK, depending on price of course.

Steve,

It has the "s" shaped cap on the pistol grip with initials on it. Looks like "LBF"

Charlie,

You'll see it, not me Charlie. If it looks like the one in the picture that Calhoun posted, numbers match and the condition is as you say.....

What would be a reason not to buy it? If you have the scratch. If the price was stupid I don't think we'd be reading the post.

Catalogue #24 page 12 shows your gun as a CD Rifle Model 1899

Calibers 25-35,30-30,303,32-40,38-55.

We designed the CD Rifle to meet the requirements of those who

prefer a plain arm but apprecate advantages of a pistol-grip

stock. The wood is of plain American Walnut, the fore-end and

pistol grip being finely checked.

Round-barrel rifle ................$23.50

Octagon or half-octagon barrel rifle..$25.00

I hope you didn't offer any more than the $25.00 it would cost to order one from the factory. smile

After 6 months of haggling, making better offers, and finally begging, I bought the 38 55.

It was made in 1904 and the serial number is 43345. Here are some photos until it stops raining and I can get it outside.
