I dont belive in a "perfect" all around rifle for everything. From varmints to elk, backpacking in the high country to staying within a couple of miles of the road system. I dont even try to make one rifle fit all situations anymore. The one rifle that I use the most for big game hunting is a Rem. 700 in 7 rem mag. but it wont be the rifle that I take if I ever draw a goat tag.

I built this one to be a perfect all around rifle. McMillan stock (Rem Mtn rifle pattern); LH M70 Classic; Lila SS barrel, turned to Win Featherweight contour; cerakoted; VX-III 2.5-8x with B&C reticle in QD rings. All up it weighs about 7.5#. It has even been to Africa with me, but I do have to say that it bores me a bit. I could hunt with it the rest of my days, and never have to turn a screw on it. Chambering? An '06.

Often wondered about the mods to the stock. Who did them and were they a PITA?

I did the modifications, and they were not too bad. It did teach my why the tang angles on Winchesters and Remingtons require different patterns. I am pretty fearless when it comes to working with a synthetic stock. Epoxy and paint will cover a world of errors. I'm much more nervous with a fine piece of walnut that easily cost more than a McMillan. Cutting an inch out of this stock and gluing the foreend back on is simpler than putting an ebony foreend on a stock and shaping it from a block.
Part of it come from the necessity of being LH--you learn to adapt.

7mm-08AI, Rem 700 SS SA, Rock Creek #3 deep fluted SS 1:9" twist 5R bbl @ 22", McM Classic ADL in GAP camo, Leupy 3.5-10x40 w/ M1 elevation turret in Talley lightweights ... 120g TSX's @ 3200fps .243AI, Rem 700 CM SA, PacNor SS LVSF contour deep fluted 1:9" twist bbl @ 22", McM Classic ADL swirly OD/Blk/Tan, Leupy 3.5-10x40 w/ CDS turrets in Talley Lightwights ... 85g TSX's @ 3400fps both weigh about 7.5lbs all up, balance on the front action screw, and are IMHO perfect "all around" NA hunting rifles except for maybe the guy packing a rifle up and down the steep mountains while goat hunting...

Carl, Looks fantastic.....some details of the rifle please? Randy, thanks. That is a Brno ZKK 600, build in 1964, chambered in 7x57 Mauser. Incidentally that is the rifle a certain Leupold 3x is destined for... Here is a thread on the rifle with a few more pictures - I especially like the back up peep.

One of my favorites. A 1640 Husky in .270WIN with a Leupold 2.5-8. Built to my specs. It looks great shoots well and has nice optics. A perfect whitetail rifle for me. Terry Terry, what is that sling? Make and model? I need one! It's what I've been looking for for a special stick of mine!
