Hey guys I am new to the forum thanks for having me. I have a chance to purchase a 99H in .303 savage. The owner claims the gun has a "fruitwood" stock/forearm". I am aware of walnut and birch but is this guy stringing me along? The wood is hardwood and original but is a shade lighter than walnut. any ideas?

Hi, Have the fellow pull the butt plate and check the serial number to see if it matches the receiver. Same thing on the forearm. Forearm will be stamped on the bottom of the section that slides into the receiver.

Thanks I'll do that. I think the wood is walnut just a lighter shade of finish. I let you know how it works out.

The early variations of the 99H came in a wood other than walnut. Murray in his book refers to it as fruitwood. I have seen several and they are lighter in color than walnut and definitely don't have the walnut type grain. Don't know actually what kind of hardwood it was. If all the numbers match you should be o.k.

The pic is definitely the wood, must be pear or apple. Sorry I am not the mad trapper from Kenora I'm from Atikokan. Hey Mad Dog this gun is in good shape what do you think it is worth? Shooter only I don't collect. I also hunt and shoot a 99EG .300 and I love it (1954 vintage)

Trapper, 303 savage ammo is no longer currently being manufactured.If i wanted a shooter i'd look for a 300 savage caliber,or 30-30 WCF....JMO...and welcome to the board...Jed.

Trapper, Atikokan huh? Must see a few large bull moose up in that area, no wonder you want 190 grs. I think I can accomadate you with maybe a couple of boxes of factory Winchester 190's N.I.B. p.m. coming. Watch for the little mail thingy at the top of the screen.
Worth?? Unknown, hows the bluing, stock (cracks), drilled and tapped for a scope, any pics?

Joe, Bluing good, slight crack at tang (as usual) but repaired well. No extra holes, bore very good, original finish on wood thin to non existant. Overall shooter not collector. Any estimates? asking 650.00

Ouch, no way, fruitwood stock or not, I wouldn't pay $650 for an H like you just described, I'd have a hard time handing over $500. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

I don't know beans about Savages, but I've refinished some furniture, and "Fruitwood" is a color of stain that greatly resembles the picture above. My guess: The "fruitwood" stock is birch with fw stain on it.
An old dog don't run no trails, an old dog don't flush no quails, but he can still bury a bone.
