I got this one yesterday morning at 6;30AM. I was running late and pulled into the public hunting area parking lot at 6:00AM. I checked in and arrived at my hunting spot at around 6:18AM. I walk into the woods and this bird gobbles down the hill below me. I hit a few yelps on my David Mill's glass pot call and he gobbles again. I sit down up against the closest big tree. I hit him again with some yelps and he gobbles and is closing ground fast. I seen him come up the hill at about 45yds. He was in full strut. I waited and he kept strutting. I finally hit him with a few yelps on my mout call. He was still in strut. So I hit him again. He finally hopped up on the log and over it. I loaded him up with some Hevi-13 3" 2oz #7's at 45yds from my 870 and MAD Super MAX .675 choke. He flopped a good bit, but he looked like he was hit by a train. I killed him in about 12 minutes and maybe even less. Not bad for the public land and only the second day of the season here in MO.

24lbs
9.5" beard
1 and 1/8" and 1 and 1/4" spurs

Thats one of those fun hunts, the ones that make you stay one the slow days.

Thanks.

Now I have to wait until Monday before I can go again. That's the law here in MO. It gives others their chance to get their first bird.

Congrat's on your bird. I hunt the SE Ozark public ground too. I called a Jake on Monday and passed him. Tuesday I got in the game with a Longbeard but some sassy hens carried him off. I tried an end 'round ambush where I thought they were taking him, but never heard another peep and nothing responded to my soft sweet sexy talk - lol. I worked today, but I'm going out again Thursday morning and we'll see how it goes.

Next Monday I hope to kill his younger brother. But I would be happier to kill his bigger brother if he has one. LOL!

Brad, That is a very nice bird - good story too.

Brad -

That's just a fantastic bird. The one I shot a few days back is a true midget compared to that thing. I hope you score an equally nice (or nicer) bird your next time out.

I saw three Tom's this morning, Opener for CT, they were doing their thing for about 30 hens in front of a 10 million dollar house in Lyme CT. I was on my way to the Airport and I like taking the back roads. Lots of Birds around, or at least in my part of CT.
