Picked one up awhile ago. SERIAL NUMBER ON STOCK AND BUTTPLATE MATCH RECIEVER.However; there is no jm or m under barrel. does have correct address on top of barrel.Must all 1895,s have to have the m or jm under barrel? There are a couple marks under barrel; one looks like a comma. thanks, doug

Never seen one that didn't have one or the other but who knows what might have gotten by in the line.
Comma sounds like a mad dog mark.

I thought that's what it was.I've seen 5 or6, all octagon and marked with a jm or m. This is a round barrel; looks correct, but who knows. thanks

Could be one of the last? Parts use up? maybe the rifles were proofed at marlin that could even explain the MD mark?

The proof mark was a pretty important stamp to be left off...but people do error.
Maybe the barrel was replaced or changed in its early days. I doubt that Marlin proof stamped unassembled barrels that would have gone to Savage after completion of the contract. And Savage did not proof mark barrels in the early years.

Well, maybe it wasn't that important. I wonder if the proof marks were hit-n-miss on the marlin's, also?

I agree with Rick. I assume it was important. But I never saw a round barrel 1895,so thought I would ask.It does have a good scratch that partially covers some type of circle but could not determine if it was abn m or not.Like I said, has correct barrel address and all but no CLEAR markings. sn-6077.A grey gun, but still an 1895.Don't really collect 1895's, but picked it up for a fair price I thought. thanks, Doug

I remember one person here saying that their 1899 had a MD mark which just shows that some of the Marlin barrels did make it over to the Savage factory after production started there. Also theres that 1899 I picked up last month that had an 1895 stock numbered to the gun and an 1895 barrel on it, no JM marks on the barrel though which I'm guessing means the barrels were marked as a proof after the gun was put together.

Mad Dog, what was the serial range? Savage offered to upgrade the bolt on 1895's for a small fee after the 1899's came out. Any chance it could have been an 1895 that went through the upgrade?
