Have just gotten a pre 64 Winchester Model 70 in .375 H&H. I need to get a scope base and 1" rings and could use some guidance. Obviously, I need something that will tolerate the recoil of the .375 H&H and if possible I would like to use QR rings for my scope. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

Talley rings and bases are fairly standard as far as quick detach set-ups go. The Leupold QR system, which utilizes small studs, works fine too.
Weaver bases will give you access to all different brands of quick-detach rings; I like steel Warne bases and have them on my Model 70 in 375 H&H.

I've never had or wanted QR bases/rings but in the mid-1980s I put a set of standard steel Leupold two-pc bases and EAW 30mm rings on my .375 holding a Kahles 1.1-4.5X20 Helia S monster of a scope. Since then I've fired at least 300-400 factory rounds and about the same number of full power reloads. Never a complaint -- never had any trouble at all.
If I were doing it again I would insist on steel bases/rings to match the scope and two piece bases to maximize access to chamber. Wouldn't care much about brand.

For QDs, Talley is the best there is. Also, worth considering, is going for their standard rings w/o the levers (these also have two screws at the top of each ring) - these can be removed/replaced w/ Torx driver easily and return to zero very well, every time. I don't like levers; they stick out like sore thumbs. In the heat of the moment, you're already late to consider changing sighting arrangements; the change should be made deliberately.
If you don't need QDs, the Leupold Dual Dovetails are excellent on big kickers.

I put Leupold cross slot bases and Weaver rings on one with a 3X Leupold...ugly as sin but "handsome is as handsome does",and it is hard to find anything lower and lighter than that set-up.
IIRC Finn Aaggards' 375 M70 had Weaver rings and bases with a 2 1/2 power Weaver. I doubt any of us will use a 375H&H any harder.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Thanks for all the info. Does anyone with more experience than I, have the specific part number for steel two piece bases from Leupold that will work with the Pre 64 Model 70 Winchester in .375H&H? I found the table supplied on the Leupold site to be unclear and don't want to order the incorrect part number. I would want either the QR rings or the cross slot base rings to function with the base. From what I did find out, the 1" low rings should work with the Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 x 20 scope that I am going to use. Does that sound accurate?

Yep, I agree. Weaver mounts and rings are not the most handsome, but on more rifles than I can count and tons of big bores........they flat work and don't cost an arm and a leg. YMMV
If you find yourself in a hole....quit digging

I'd get something meatier for rings and bases for the .375, although your scope choice is good and not so heavy. Just my previous experience with my 378 which is just a 375HH on steroids. LOL
It is better to be judged by 12 than to be carried by 6.

Hard to beat the Talleys...
I don't like Weavers as the tend to allow the scope to roll to the right bouncing around in a safari truck or in a saddle scabbard..This is because the screws tighten in that directions only.
you won't have recoil issue with a std. .375 H&H..The 1.5x5 Leupold, 1x4 Leupold or even my favorite the old 3X Leupold are all good choices on a .375...Recoil problems don't raise their ugly head until you get to the 458 Lott and beyond..

Ray, Glad you like the Talleys. That was what I finally ordered. A bit hefty in price but hopefully they will work as needed. Scope, rifle and mounts hopefully will all get here by this weekend so I can put everything together and try it out.
Thanks again to everyone for their input.

leupold dual dovetails if your just going to leave the rings on and not be changing things around. They are strong and look good and streamlined on the pre 64. not that others won't work but DD's are really good. unless your trying to save weight--then go talley lghtwt.
