Has anyone read this book? "Born Fighting- How the Scots-Irish Shaped America"
Just saw Webb on C-Span... seems like a great book.

I hadn't heard of the book, but a few weeks ago the Parade magazine supplement in the newspaper had an article about the Scots-Irish, including a very diverse group of well-known Americans who share that heritage. My impression is that these hardy, independent souls must give the liberal Dems fits!

I read/have "Fields of Fire" and much enjoyed.
My assumption is that it's the same James Webb?....................

Yup, same feller.
He went to Annapolis with Oliver North. He has written several books, and I think he has his own think-tank for international policy or something like that. I remember when he bagged out on Reagan, just up and quit being Secretary of the Navy, evidently didn't like politics or something,,, don't exactly remember.
I think I got all that correct.

"As for the mountaineer, or the wild Scotch-Irish, this is a species of poor folk gathered from all the nations of the world. They dwell in miserable log cabins, in the mountains three of four hundred miles from the seacost, and live from the chase. Since these people usually maintain relations from the Indians, who are their neighbors, they take pains to assume a wild appearance, which results naturally from their rough manner of living. They are excellent and dangerous shots, and can easily bring a folded bayonet off their leg. They choose their own leaders and pay not attention to discipline. He who falls into their hands as prisoners seldom keeps anything more than what nature gave him at birth."
I took the liberty of lifting this quote from another forum, it came from the letters of a British Officer during the Revolutionary War. The part about "bring a folded bayonet off their leg" probably referring to a concealed ("folded" in old English parlance) knife stuck in a legging. Kinda makes ya proud don't it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> On the other hand, my kin is/was Irish-Irish, of the Native Catholic persuation, so I suppose these people were our blood enemies. "Sigh"....... prob'ly why my posts read the way they do. I am grateful to them for their tradition of armed self-reliance, which I believe led directly to our own Second Amendment, and indirectly to this very forum. Haven't read it but read an op-ed Webb wrote when it was released -- was so taken with his description of "our people" that I gave the book to Dad for Christmas.
Last year I gave him Arthur Herman's "How the Scots Invented the Modern World" -- when I flipped it open at random, I was on a page talking about how the Scots popularized the concept of the militia, resulting in the inclusion of the Second Amendment! Dad liked it and after I asked if I could borrow it, I found it rewrapped for me under the Christmas tree ...

"Modern World", "Second Amendment" yada, yada, yada... So what? Turns out you'd all be still living in CAVES if it weren't for us Irish-Irish. See.... http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0385418493/ref=sib_dp_pt/104-9577806-8193534#reader-linkBirdwatcher
