Was looking at the various MSR stoves at the local camping store yesterday,and noticed it was about a 50/50 split as far as canister fuel stoves vs the ones using white gas or similar. What are the merits of one versus the other? Can you remove the canister fule from the stove once it's been connected,or will you lose the fuel? I'm looking for one to use for a sheep hunt so want to get the lightest stove possible that is reliable and produces suffiecient heat. Also have to consider the weight and quantity of fuel one would have to carry. Is there a clear winner here?

No clear winner. Each stove design has it's strengths and weaknesses. The temps that you anticipate will determine which type of stove to take.
Read the thread that junglecarbine referenced where this subject has been discussed at length.
