I was in a gun shop yesterday and saw a used set of reloading dies for 270 Savage. They were only stamped 270 and looked like they were altered a bit at home. Is this some kind of wildcat deal?? Any ideas??

They were Pacific dies and marked "270 Savage" in black magic marker on the outside of the box.

I remember reading about a wildcat 270/300 Sav many years ago in one of the gun magazines. The 270/300 was apparently "standardized" for reamers and dies. Sorry I can't remember more but my memory isn't what it once was, but then it never was what it used to be.

I was just reading about the .270 Savage in one of Ackleys books I borrowed from a friend.

He states that many years ago quite a few people claimed to have invented this wildcat, but who really knows who was the first.

He goes on to say that the .300 Savage necked to .270 was a well balanced cartridge. He states the regular .270 is a little overbore, which the .270 Savage corrects and is quite close to the .270 in velocity and one he personally could recommend.

Sounds intriguing! Take a non collectable 99, rebarrel to .270 and have a lever action .270. Lots of bullets available to the reloader.

Thanks guys! I also saw this on another forum:

"The wildcat was called the 270 Savage or 270 Titus depending who you talk to. It was based on the 300 Savage case."

My recollection for what it is worth is that the wildcat was originated by barrelmaker Bliss? Titus in the 1940s.

It seems like a lot of trouble to reconfigure a 99 to accept a .270 caliber cartridge. How would you do it?? Bore out a .250 barrel to a .270 caliber and twist it on a .300 Savage receiver???

Does anybody own an "Ackley improved" 99?

The 260 Remguy should be able to fill you in on the details of the wildcat Savage rounds. Now, where is he when you need him?

Hi,

Rumoured to have been developed sometime around 1942. A few different versions over the years, the Improved case being the most popular, blown out body, and sharp shoulder angle, typical of Ackely Improvements.

Supposed to be a decent chambering with lighter bullets. The 150's have to be seated deeply to cycle through the mag and action.

100 Gr. bullet, 43 gr of 4064 = 3190 fps
140 Gr. bullet, 41 gr of 4320 = 2685 fps

Not too bad.

I've always wondered if they wildcatted the 300 up to .350 Savage.... Anyone heard of one?

What do you want to know about wildcatting a 99?

Since the 270-300 Savage was designed before the introduction of the 308 and 284, I would say that it had a place in its day, but its day has long passed. I've had a few wildcat built on 99s, mostly 99CDs, since I like the 284 based wildcats. I have a 99CD in 257AI and wish that I'd listened to Bearrr264 and the gunsmith, Ray Montgomery, and done a straight 257 Roberts instead. I've never been able to get it to feed and I've modified several magazines trying to make it work.

I currently have 99CDs in 25-284, 257AI, 6.5-284, 30-284, and 338-284. I also have a 99F in 260, rebored from 243, a couple of rebarreled 99Rs in 22-250 and 220 Swift, a 99H rechambered from 303 to 307, and an 1899CD rebored from 38-55 to 40-55.

I have had 99CDs in 6-284 and 35-284, but didn't think that the performance was as good as the similar 25-284 and 338-284. I also don't particularly care for the 25 Souper and 30-284, as I haven't been able to get the increase in performance that I had expected.

Standard disclaimer, YMMV

I bought it at an old hardware store in northern NM in 1998 for $325. It has a 1/2R & 1/2O barrel and it is mounted with the only Vavar/Wittek receiver sight I've ever seen made for a 99. It came with a tobacco can containing an Ideal loading tool (complete!), an Ideal mold that is marked "40-82-260 WCF", a leather cartridge belt, 17 loaded cartridges, and 6 empty cases.

It proves that sometimes even a blind hog finds a truffle.

Vaver did indeed catalog the superlative dial micrometer sight for the 1899 but in the twenty or so years since I learned it existed, I've never seen one. Glad to have the fact confirmed. Also was made for the Krag but I've never seen one of those either.

I found the listing. No.35-M4C, Wittek-Vaver Dial Micrometer. Sound correct?

I have it as 35-M4D on my computerized want list, when I get back to NYC will check a Vaver brochure to see which is correct. Have been looking for these sights for 99 and Krag for decades.

Jeff, is your sight marked with the model number?
