Congratulations guys. This has been one of the better threads of late. I have enjoyed it, and, wish there were more like it.
Imagine your grave on a windy winter night. You've been dead for 70 years. It's been 50 since a visitor last paused at your tombstone..... Now explain why you're in a pissy mood today.

CDNN had Rem Mausers for $499 in .375H&H. If I were you, I would jump on one of those, if they are still available. Good luck.

Bighorn and BobinNH,
Very well stated and my thoughts exactly.
It's amazing how much tougher critters have become in the last 20-30 years.

The longer this thread goes, the further off the ledge I feel. The plain fact of the matter is there is nothing the big 30's can't handle in NA (with proper bullets) Thanks for saving my a bunch of $$. Now, about that varmint rig...

Smart move! I believe in building a couple of honest rifles, get intimate with them and go forth and fill up a few arks. I'd build up a good 200 grain Nozler load and get to it.
Sure it's fun to have a project rifle from time to time but for me I pretty much only use the same old friends year to year for hunts.
Once again for me this works, I want to spend my money practicing, and going hunting not on another rifle.

The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

There's a "custom" 5-1/2 lbs. Remington 700 Ti .416 for sale over at AccurateReloading.com. The rifle that kills on both ends!... That would do it if you are the "Hulk", then you could wrestle the bear

If I was/am going to take a step up from a 300mag, I would take a step UP! For me the 8's and 338's are a half-step. I would go at least 358 Norma and likely a 375 H&H or Ruger. compare bullets of like weights... the .338s lack for little and are capable for all game, period... jim carmichel's writings on the subject are what swayed me initially... unlike many here, i am indeed a carmichel fan.... i figured out a long time ago though, that, with a .300 winnie in the stable, my top end game shooting was covered... and then some.... With today's premium bullets, I am in complete agreement. If you actually want a step up maintaining trajectory, you could neck up the 8mm Remington magnum to .338, or try to find a decent shooting 340 Weatherby

Side note, finding a decent shooting 340 is as easy as building one on a 70 or 700 with a 4.5 weight Schneider.
All of the 340's I've worked with set up right will shoot .75" or better day in and day out. It's an incredibly accurate rig! So go big or....go home...grin
Now back to that lowly 30 cal mag..

Big fan of the 9.3x62mm here. With my 7mm-08 they are a perfect pair.

Dober Mark, Ad a handloader, do you remove the freebore from the reamer? John

Yes sir, my smith cuts them sans free bore. My first one shot so good I just couldn't believe it. It would on many days do 5 of the 250 Horns into .75".
I have had 3 Schneider 4.5 weight .340 done by the same smith and all of them shoot tiny bug hole groups and think that they were meant to be rodent guns...<g>
Over the years I've been around probably 6 more 340's put together by the same smith, all free bore bore and all of them lights out shooters.
While I don't use the 340 much anymore it's still one of my all time favs and is a fabulous long range chuck/yote rig.

Depends on what your going to hunt..If your going after DG in Africa then the .375 or 416 would be a good choice.
If you staying on this side of the pond then the .338 Win is the most logical advance, perhaps a 9.3x62 if your a gun nut type.

my battery jumps from 300 Win Mag right to 375 H&H...unless you want some super flat trajectory it's not a bad way to go....it won't really have a whole lot more energy than the 358 Norma and 340 Wtby and maybe less energy than the 338 RUM and the 338/378 Wtby at longer ranges and they'll shoot flatter but a 375 H&H is something every shooter should own at least once.

My thoughts, exactly! However, you could handle both with a 340 Wby. Lou

Cartridges don't get confusing, we get confused with cartridges.
That is because the overlap means they all perform about the same on the common species most people hunt.
I always recommend you look for the rifle you like that fits best, and appeals most. The cartridge selection thereafter is less important.
Once the cartridge is selected, the fun part becomes the bullets and powder you will use.
Once you have a .30 cal, you need a 40/45 caliber to go with it.

+1 for the .375 Ruger.
I like the 338s but this will take to the next level.

My girl friend's father was a charter fishing guide in Alaska, where she grew up. He went there after returning from WW II. He used a 30-06, with 220 gn bullets to kill Brown Bear.
