thank's stealhead , that's about what I thought, I have been reading alot of your post's and man do you have a colorful palate for your stock color's , I think your keeping mcmillan in fresh paint, why are so many guy's using mcm. classic's on build's ? I have 2 one on a 375 h/h winchester and the other on a 35 whelan A/I sako that I just rebarreled to a 30-06, but I pose this ? because I recently ordered 2 mcm. edge 's in the remington sporter, the classic seem's a little anemic for my taste, so I hope I am not going overboard with a little more stock, they seem pretty close ,but I have never handled one, they just look good and I really like the remington mountain rife stock and the sporter look's like one on steriod's, looking to use medium ring's on it, any feedback would be appreciated, thanks

I'd go with much less tube on the 280 build, but that's me. Never saw the reason in going with a bigger tube and then removing metal from it.
Where in AK?

It's really really tough to beat a classic.. I go with a classic on my 338rum. Damn good stock design if you ask me.

yea if I had to do it over, I probrably would have used a #3 , but the smith I used , ordered a 2.5 and them fluted it, so it came in a little too light for my taste, it's ok though, he is making good on it and a fluted #4 should be pretty close to what I wanted initially, which was a rem. magnum sporter contour, anyhow if it comes out at 8lb or so that will be a gun I don't mind carrying all day or sitting on a stand with for whatever manner of beast less than a browny,

I have a 280AI on a 700, with a fluted #4 Rock 5R, 24" in a Basner stock (with a 1" Decelerator pad), with a VX3 4.5x14-40mm in Talley Lightweights. It weights 7 lbs 14 oz. Hope that helps.

Hey Ted just saw that 260 ai you built, thing of beauty,, having something similar built by RWS in iowa as we speak along with a 308 in the same configuration , Rem 700 s/a's , brux #4,s mcm. edge rem. sporter's , cutting the tubes to 23 for the 308 and 24 for the 260 rem. , was thinking of fluting the tubes , but eh I can tote the extra 6 oz's and hopefully gain some added velocity ?? anyhow will post picture's when their finished.

I'd snap it up if it's availible...

Any photos on this one? I'm thinking #4 fluted on my 280AI build, but it depends on which stock I use. This one is intended to be a bit heavier than the typical medium-weight sporter and will likely be wearing a laminate and a moderately big piece of glass.

With a fluted #4, I'd go standard fill and not edge. But, that's just me.

Yep. If the balance isn't there, I don't care how well it shoots.

A #4 contour with an edge is counter productive IMO. I would go with a standard McMillan and a #3 contour, you will have a more balanced rifle and would be happier, I think.

The 2.5 is is still on the action and shoot's fine, she is in a laminate right now , and it's ok, but not what I had ordered, I am sure the guy thought he was doing the right thing , but I already had a lone wolf summit for the barreled action and was looking to use that for this project, but when it came in to my suprise it was a little longer than ordered 25 inches and a bit light, I don't know if he will keep it or not, he told me I could have it after the new one get's threaded ,but that was 6 month's ago , so we will see, and I thought it might be nice on my wife's a-bolt some time down the road or maybe I'l have 2 280's in the near future, if I decide to sell it I will put it up in the classified , and as far as this build being heavy 8lb's for a rifle with a little weight forward swing weight, sound's good to me ,I had a .300 wm in the 15 oz. summit for years, that was pretty close to what this should come close to and it's responsable for alot of game on the wall and was a pleasure to carry chasing game all around this great state of alaska, only hope you guy's out there get the opportunity to experience it , it's one of those places where your dream's and expectation's can be met and exceeded, anyhow thank's for your thought s and will keep you in the loop when this thing get's finished

Very nice. The black metal looks great with that stock.
I'm thinking the fluted #4 route may be a bit more flexible than the #5 or Light Palma route I was originally planning.
Thank you for the photos.

Northwest you got fine taste in arms , and what coating ? also was wondering how that cds is working out and what load are you using ? any feed issue's with the a/i shoulder ? Those two rifle's you just posted are IMO the cat's meow of rifle's, they are sweet!

The coating is Graphite Black Cerakote. Both the Cerakote and stock paint was done by CAS. I just got the CDS put on and haven't had time to really play with it yet. I think it will work out well though.
My pet load for the last 8+ years (this is the second 280AI barrel on this rifle) has been a 140gr Barnes X (or TSSX) behind RL22. 4 mule deer bucks have fallen to this combo. I want to try some new powders this Summer and may give some 150gr bullets a try.
No feed issues with any of my AIs and they are all on 700/Seven actions.
Thanks again for the nice comments.
