...the lava shelf that constitutes the Hawaii Volcano State Park calves off and buries the Pacific Rim in a tsunami that will measure in the thousands of feet rather than tthe 10's such as just happened in the Indian Ocean?

For those unaware of this probability, do a Google on Long Run Out Landslides. It is an event that occurs with rather regular timing every 60-70,000 years, and each island of the chain has done this in progression as they are formed, the last, about 60,000 years ago occurring on Oahu. That event dumped approximately 10 square miles of "stuff" into the Pacific thus bathing the Pacific Rim in a tsunami that geological evidence says was about 1,600' high in the Pacific Northwest, and as high as 600' in Australia. The HVSP shelf will be the first event of that island(the BIG island) and will involve approximately 250 square miles. The shelf fracture already exists, and it is growing with fair rapidity. The "experts" predict a wave possibly as high as 3000' on the shores of the Pacific Northwest when it happens. Not "If", but most assuredly WHEN.

Who is going to aid whom? Herein lies a serious flaw in the concept of Globalization I think. If you don't make it before the fact you won't have it for quite some time after...there will not be a world economy afterwards, nor much of a world population to feed same.

I find it odd that this train is coming down the tracks and nobody seems to want to face it. Is it too staggering for the masses to grapple with? Time to collectively proceed as ostriches? Can we conceptualize a meteor impact but not this?

To further ruffle feathers, there is a consensus among the "experts" that this event will not be contained within the Pacific Rim, and will in fact have substantial impact on the Atlantic Basin, especially the South Atlantic Rim. Ah, well, the words of the day will be, "Surf's Up!"

Aloha

Thanks for the info. I never saw this before.

I kinda' figured some disease will come screaming out of some 3rd world hellhole or genetic engineering and cause a major population adjustment.

A while back, I read about a similar potential risk from the Canary Islands. That would do the same thing to the east coast of the Americas.

Yeah, and the Yellowstone Caldera is 100,000 years overdue for it's explosion. Something like 10,000 times as large as Mt. St. Helens, and 100 times larger than Krakatoa.

You know, I'm going to file this under "crp happens", and shoot a few rounds of trap this afternoon...... JMO, Dutch.

I gave up worrin' about crap I have no control over 'bout 40 yearsago. 'Nuff stuuf to worry about without that stuff. Just go to the woods and range as often as possable and shoot them RIMFIRES. Like has been said:

You got to sing like you don't need the money
Love like you'll never get hurt
You got to dance like nobody's watchin'
It's gotta come from the heart
If you want it to work

PS. When it's all over come sliding to a stop yelling "WHAT A RIDE"!

There have been a couple of shows on Discovery or TLC on both the Canary Islands and Hawaii in regards this issue. It's probably a point lost on the potential victims, but as I recall the one in the Canaries will be a tad smaller. I guess the thing that differentiates them is that the crack at HVSP is growing steadily, but the other is awaiting a volcano to come to life. Well, a rose by any other name....

Dutch, I've heard of that one too but I'm not going to worry about it any more than the tusnami thing. If Yellowstone blows on the scale of the past it will be an extinction event for at least the western hemisphere. I read once that the Cascadia Fault which is responsible for the Super Quake that hit Alaska about 40-45 years back is making vulcanologists queasy because there is some thought that it may be linked to Mt. Ranier's eruptive past, as well as the Cauldera at Yellowstone. Now wouldn't that be a fine time to yell "Pull"!? Trap is cool, I'm gonna shoot some quail instead. They cook up better.

I guess if I had a point regarding all this "what if" stuff is that some things need a bit of perspective. It seems like most of the planet is jumpin' out its tailpipe over the wave over in the Indian Ocean. Well, I may not see any of the events above, and maybe you won't either, but somewhere along the line there will be a major upheaval on the planet that will make all things past pale in comparison. Present generations are doing little if anything in the form of long range planning to assist those in the future for a calamity of Biblical proportions, that we know with absolute certainty will happen. Maybe sooner than later. Maybe we shouldn't.

Right on TLEE. Why wory about things you have no control over. When my time is up I am gone.....doesn't matter by what means or fashion. Until then I'll enjoy life. AS a good friend once told me "You can't hide from God".

Dan, when she all really lets go, no disaster planning will be of much use. Whoever is left will have to deal with it the only way they can and no planning can prepare for it. It's only a matter of time before old mother earth decides to roll over and shake belch or fart away some of us parasites that been along on a ride too long.

I can never get over peoples stunned surprise and shock when things like this happen. I expect things like this to happen, nothing shocking or surprising about it.

Live like you'd be proud if it was your last day, says me. It don't wait for nobody.

Tidal waves, asteroids, earthquakes, drunk drivers. We're never more than a couple seconds from Round Two (what's next, as in the next life) anyway.

This whole tidal wave thing has staggered me. My horror meter is broken.

Note to self: keep the life insurance paid up.

A 1600-3000 foot high wave isn't something you can prepare for. It's going to slick off a bunch of people and stuff. It'll probably even get my places since it's at 500 feet above sea level and only 15 miles up from part of Puget Sound.

Of course the ground here is made up of stuff deposited from activity on Mt. Rainier and the stuff is very deep, like 100 feet.

Some things you can prepare for. You can wear your seat belt and be careful around power tools and guns. Other things, well....there's nothing you can do. Even worrying won't work.

With the exception of putting together a "jump" bag to grab and go if you needed to haul in five min or so what can you do.

With hurricane season we usually know days ahead of time the danger so we can buy yet more undrunk bottled water.

The tidal wave question has been discussed on our work boat. It usually starts out like, "what would you do if you saw a 50 foot wall of water heading this way"?

If you are going to quote Guy Clark you should at least give him credit for it! Have been seeing that chorus all over the place without attribution, lately and it is good enough that Guy deserves the credit for it...

And don't forget, all this global warming, according to the enviro-nazis, is going to bring about another ice age, prematurely, I suppose. Personally, I don't mind a little global warming, I just wish we could have a little of it right now!

Bow into the wave, and make some diesel smoke. If per chance I was still in the wheelhouse at the top, and the wave hadn't knocked out the windows and electronics, then I'd be ready to throw her in reverse so as not to plow the bow into the water in the trough.

Repeat as needed.

Hey Brian, that's pretty good, I have seen that done first hand with me in the back of a bass boat in heavy waves. Just made it into dock full throttle with a full load of fresh water loaded with sharp hooks and lures floating everywhere. Prtner was running boat, I jumped out and tied boat off to pier to keep it up while buckets and bilge pump worked frantically. -- no

Glad ya made it safe Sonnie! Open bow boats, like that bass boat and my skiff, are susceptible to taking on way too much water at times.

Just something to reflect on:

The greatest tidal wave, the largest volcanic explosion, the biggest asteroid impact, the most horrific pandemic. a magnitude 10 earthquake are no more personally lethal than a stone tipped arrow in the heart or being waylaid by a sabretoothed tiger.

A guy in the audience jumped up in a panic when the lecturer said "In a million years, this spot where we are tonight will be under fifty feet of sea water."

"How soon?" the alarmed citizen asked.

"In a million years."

"Whew!" the relieved citizen sat back down. "I thought you said a thousand years."

Just another reason, among a couple of thousand others, NOT to live anywhere in or near California....

So far, I think WI is safe for a while.....
