I have hunted some of the same places as Elmer Keith too.

Of course Keith also hunted the Prophet-Muskwa area of BC, and before O'Connor, but he went along on the trip primarily as a camp helper, though he ended up doing some guiding as well. Though O'Connor later hunted several other areas in BC, the Prophet-Muskwa trip was his first in that province, I believe.

But I live in the same area Elmer did when he lived in Montana, in fact am only about 12-15 miles from the Keith ranch that his father bought. I regularly hunt the local mountains in the same areas he hunted. I have also hunted other parts of Montana that Elmer did, notably the Seeley-Swan area west of the continental divide.

I have hunted where Les Bowman took Jack on several ocassions and I hunted the Throughfare many times...Jack also hunted on a ranch my dad had leased in the Texas Big Bend area..He hunted our Coues and Mule Deer..I have probably hunted the same area in Idaho that he hunted as I have about hunted all over Idaho in the last 30 years..I have hunted the Kaibab of Ariz. also and Jack hunted there.

I have hunted many times all the vast area that Elmer Keith hunted around Salmon, Id. I have camped at the same locations that Elmer camped.

I have the issue that L.S. Chadwick's story he wrote is in about his world record stone sheep. I have read through the years that it was at least finished off by the guide if I remember correctly. It is an amazing sheep.

Chadwick used to have a summer home across the road from what is now the Snowsville General Store near Randolh Vermont. Fifty-five years ago, my parents would go there to buy groceries, and if the shades were open, I'd gawk up at the mounted heads on the wall. His son used to live there full time. The Chadwick ram is or at least was, on display at the Cody Museum in Cody, WY.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jack O'Connor, his wife and his son Brad in 1973. We were all hunting whitetails at a ranch on the Salmon river owned by Dave Christensen.

I was a wrangler in the area O'Conner hunted bighorns in Alberta. We go back every year for a few days at least. It's beautiful country, and much of the area is a Wilderness Area,so off limits to motorized vehicles. That has allowed it to stay much the same as it was when he hunted it. Apparently there's a small cabin back there with his name, along with many others scratched on the wall. Never got to see it myself. Planning a backpack sheep hunt there next year, very excited.

Here's some pics from our trip last year. We didn't go far enough to really get to the area he would have hunted, but he likely at least passed through on his way.

I have a bunch of great photo's from the time I worked for the sheep outfitter, but they're not digital. If I had a scanner maybe I could scan them into my computer, but I don't know if the quality would be any good.
