I have a a .358" caliber case that holds 114g water, and I want to shoot a lead round nose of 300g and about 1.22" length at about 1800 fps. I have no idea where to start! Anyone able to help me out? Much obliged. Taylor

sideirojohn; Is this a wildcat? In checking the cartridge listings in QuickLoad V 3, the largest case capacity that I find for the 358 is 105 grains of water in the 358 STA. If you are dealing with a wildcat, it is easier to construct the case in QuickDesign and then transfer the data over to QuickLoad. From there, the program is pretty straight forward. If you do not have access to QuickDesign, email me a list of cartridge measurements and I will see what I can do for you.

If I had either then I sure would! Just haven't allocated the $$, hence the post here. But yes, it's a 358-404 Imp. I forgot to mention, the COL will be about 3.55, and the bullet is actually 1.144" long, not 1.22". Not familiar enough with the program, but can't one simply enter in the parameters, or does the case need to be in the database?

You can enter your own data, for any case or bullet that's not already in the QuickLOAD data base, but you have to enter all the data for the case, the bullet, the bore, and the barrel, precisely. And to fit the software to your system, you'll have to tweak the "weighting factor" to get the best predictions of performance.
"Good enough" isn't.
Always take your responsibilities seriously but never yourself.

sideironjohn, I went into ql to .358STA and modified capacity to 115gr. Then, set up a powder table, looking for loads from 60% to 90% load density, that would yield 1800 fps from a 24" barrel witha 300gr bullet. These should be in the ballpark, and pressure looks quite mild. These are labled "Dangerous Loads" because the STA is a wildcat, no SAAMI standard pressure. These are all fairly slow powders, consistency may not be stellar on these low pressure loads. Your ballistic goal would be a lot easier in a case like .358 Win, or 35 Whelen. Here are the results:
Cartridge : .358 STA
Bullet : .358, 300, ABW Kodiak PP SPBC
Cartridge O.A.L. L6 : 3.600 inch or 91.44 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch or 609.6 mm
Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Muzzle Velocity: 1800 fps or 548 m/s
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load ordering can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.
USE ONLY FOR COMPARISON !
70 loads produced a Loading Ratio below user-defined minimum of 60%. These powders have been skipped.

Thanks a heap! I know it's silly. I have a bunch of beautiful bullets, and I want to work up to leading velocity; see where it goes. Even a 358 Norma would be a better choice if I were just looking to shoot this bullet. But I'm sorta coming at it from the other direction. I may be able to get 2k. This seems to be a pretty clean barrel. Funny, I was jokingly wondering if BMG wouldn't be the ticket. QL seems to think it just might be.
