LBK,
For the post-71 rifles, subtract the first 2 digits from 100 for the YOM. Works for almost everything and includes your 444. SW

Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number:
1946-C 1947-D 1948-E 1949-F 1950-G 1951-H 1952-J 1953-K 1954-L 1955-M 1956-N 1957-P 1958-R 1959-S 1960-T 1961-U 1962-V 1963-W 1964-Y,-Z 1965-AA 1966-AB 1967-AC 1968-AD, -68 1969-69 1970-70 1971-71 1972-72
Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100: Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

Thanks for the info. I just bought a 336 in 30-30 that is is great condition for $200. It is my first lever action other than a M88 that my wife (a lefty) expropriated when we married and she began hunting. I am looking forward to carrying it this November. Using this method I was able to decipher that it was produced in 1981.

Sounds like a great buy! I love Marlins; they're a little short for my long arms, but they're great fun to shoot.

I am pleased in that it is in exceptional condition and had the old gold trigger. I too find it a little short and have considered adding a pad to lengthen it. I may add a lace on/slip on so it can be pulled off for use by my preteen son.
I plan to pull off the Tasco that came with it and either add a aperture sight or mount an old but good Weaver K2.5 w/ PCH reticle that I have. My 53 year old bi-focal eyes are favoring the Weaver.

What about a B000 plus three more digits for an 1895 Marlin .45-70? I always guessed it was an early 70s gun, but I do not see any B prefixes. Any info much appreciated. Thanks.
