I love the Sav 99. I have four, .250, .300, .243, and .308. I also have a Win Mod 88 in .308.

I always have my eyes open for a donor Mod 99 .308 for a rebarrel to a truck, short barreled carbine. A 7mm-08 seems to trip my trigger, but a .260 or a .338 Fed might be in the picture. Pros and cons of these three calibers for an easy barrel change out would be appreciated. Thanks.

Easiest to convert the clip model 99C's, otherwise you have to mess with making sure the rotor will feed the new cartridge acceptably.

Any of those cartridges should be fine with any 99 with a serial number of 900,000 or higher, or starting with a letter. A receiver from an earlier 99 doesn't have enough room internally for anything longer than a 250 Savage or 300 Savage cartridge.

Even with the same parent case are there still issues with feeding from the rotary mag?

If the shoulder of the cartridge moves, then you may have issues.

Thanks Calhoun, I'm about to get my first 99 and I'm kinda excited.
A pre-1960 99F in .308 Win.

Thanks, Calhoun. I knew I had read of some problems. Your answer about the cartridge shoulder makes perfect sense.

nsaqam, Mod 99's are like adult toy "potato chips". Bet you can't eat just one. My .308 took 8 points the last two years. My 2008 was a measured 313yds. Last years was 80yds. Both were bang, flop. A .308 is a great place to start. Start looking for a .284 and a .358. They may be out of reach by the time that the bug really hits you.

Oh yeah... serious addiction.

Need to go old school and pick up a 300 Savage next. Then you'll find that the 308 gets you just just more kick to your shoulder. grin

Or an old 250-3000..

Or a turn of the century 303 Savage..

Eventually, yeah, you'll end up worse than this.

Thanks alot 6mm250, the wife is gonna be mad. smirk

Calhoun, I actually had my choice between 2 .300's and 2 .308's

I picked a .300 first but changed my mind to the .308 due to the availability of good brass choices in .308 as well as the possibility of a barrel change to .338 Federal sometime in the future.

Really want to get a .250-3000 but I'm working on my friend who has a takedown 99 from 1915 in that cartridge. Too bad it has been D&T'd!! eek eek eek

I did a beater .308 into .260 for personal use. The same rotor worked fine.

I have a 99 with an 18 1/2" bbl that was originally 30-30. I had it bored out to 38-55, uses the original rotor and feeds fine, makes a heck of a neat "truck gun".

Geez, nitpickers... Yes, there's two 99's with pads (my only 2 I think), and a 1st year Savage 110 in 243 with a pad. What can I say, they caught me at a weak moment.. The 99s are a case colored 1950's 99F that I got from saddlering, and a 99T in 300 that shoots tiny little groups - was going to swap that buttstock until I saw it shoot.
