Putting together a little .270 as a loaner/fair weather rifle. Wondering what the preferences are as to .270 bullets. Would prefer not to spring for the premium bullets, just looking for good solid, performance, mostly deer, but maybe elk. What do you all like in the .270?

Reloaded for a friends .270 for yrs, strictly for use on whitetails, using Speer 130gr flat base bullets. Performance was excellent with minimal meat damage.

Been using the Hornady Interlock on Whitetail for years, great general purpose, standard price, get the job done bullet for a .270 WIN. Get yourself a lb. of H4831sc and you will be on your way. Haven't hunted elk with a .270 WIN, so I'll leave that recommendation to someone with experience there.

As you said "mostly deer" I would go to 130gr Sierra Game King paired with 60gr. of H4831SC. If elk became available, especially the chance of a bull, then I would go to a 150gr. Partition.

My wife and I use the 130 Nosler partition for everything from coyotes to elk. Only three elk but all one shot kills. Its a little more expensive than a cup and core bullet, but well worth the extra money. We practice with Winchester 130 power points.

For deer 130gr. Sierra Gamekings - For Deer/Elk 140 gr. Hornady Interlock BTSP. Killed deer with both and they were both crazy good and accurate.

Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

Over the years I have found that,if you wanna know if a 270 "shoots",feed it 130 gr Sierra FB spitzers....IME if those don't work, the rifle is "ill".

In any of mine, the same loads with the Sierra's will work with 130 Nosler Partitions and POI will be about identical at 300-400 yards. As 270 Guy points out above, the 130 Partitions are worth the extra little cost come hunting season, kill big and little deer with impunity, and make the jump to elk sized stuff nicely. You do not need to use many as load and POI are the same as Sierra's as a general rule.

Past years the 130 Speer spitzer(as bigwhoop points out)behaves like a somewhat tougher CC bullet and I have had excellent results with them as well.

For a really tough, high weight retention 130 gr these days I like the 130 Swift Aframe, which is similar to the old 130 Bitterroot which I have used for years.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Bob, and anyone else, how do you like the 130 Sierra Flat Base Pro Hunters on game? You mentioned they shot well, but it doesn't sound like you hunt with them. A buddy I load for has about 250 of those, and first load out of the gate that I tried shot into a 1/4"! Next group was also sub MOA, not as good as the first, but I had also fired about 25 rounds without cleaning since that first group. Any opinions on the 140 Sierra HPBT GameKing? They shot pretty well too.
Assuming we draw, which we should, we've got a trophy mule deer hunt in mind and shots can be anywhere from 25 yards in the scrub oaks to 400 across a meadow.

Try the 140 grain Hornady Interlock. It's a flat shooting accurate bullet that performs darn near like a premium bullet. I have also used the 140 Nosler ballistic Tip on perhaps a dozen elk, dozens of deer and antelope (not all my kills- loaned rifles a lot).

+1 on the 150 Hornady FB. May not be a "premium", but as close as you can get. Tom

I can verify that the 140 gr Hornady is a fine bullet. Generally groups well, it is inexpensive, and it drops game.
For no good reason, I have been hunting with Partitons for many years now. However, never once did the Hornady disappoint me , or fail to perform. Go figure.

Exbiologist, I mustly do what Bob does, load Sierra's for practice, and Nosler Partitions for hunting. However, for deer, even large mule deer bucks, those sierra's will be fine. I know this because I've killed a lot of deer with Sierras. But for elk I'd use the Noslers for the extra piece of mind. Also, some .270's may like the 150gr bullets, so the same swapping plan can be used with 150gr Sierra/Nosler's.

Bob was my mentor when it came to the 270 and he gave me a perfect match Serria 130 for fun and 130 partition for hunting. now If I can just duplicate that in a 308 grin.
