Can a Ruger 77/22 barrel be put on a Ruger 77/17 HM2 rifle and then work as a 22? Anybody know anything on doing something like this, and how hard is it to change barrels on a 77/22??

yes, it can! I have been searching for quite a while for a Ruger 77/22, or a 17/17 ( in Mach 2) that I can have.. as I'd interchange the barrels on them..whichever I would manage to get ahold of... I'd pick up the other barrel from Green Mountain..
do you have a 77/17 you don't want the Mach 2 barrel from?
if so, lets talk!

I just bought a 77/17 and I just thought it would be nice to be able to interchange barrels if I wanted to. I also have a 96/22 with a green mountain 17HM2 barrel. I currently have the 17 barrel on the 96 and I was wondering if the barrels between the 96 and the 77 were interchangeable, which would save me the price of another 22lr barrel. If not oh well I'll just have to give green mountain some more money.

If you're talking .22 LR + .17 M2 or .22 mag + .17 HMR, go for it. Even the Ruger mags are the same.
The only issue I see is that especially aftermarket barrels fit into the action pretty tight and it may be challenging to swap barrels if you're expecting to do it fairly often.
There's also a rumor floating around (which I can't confirm) that, like the .22 hornet versions, the newest 77/xx rimfires coming from Ruger have threaded rather than slip-fit barrels like we're used to. I don't know if this rumor is true or not, but a thing to watch for if you're planning to purchase one with the intent of changing barrels back and forth.
