when i worked less grueling hours, it was very common for me to come home, grab a gun, and get out into the country, and walk. sometimes w/ my lab, sometimes alone. i'd take a whole bunch of cartridges, and shoot whatever i wanted, be it a dirt clod out in the field, or an errant skunk. most often my companion was my 30-30, just because it is an extremely fun rifle to shoot. i'd forgotten about this aimless wandering, until this weekend. as a reaction to lots of stress, i did that. grabbed my 30-30, stuffed a few pockets full of ammo, and went shooting. that is a joy. found it relaxing, and for the first time in a long time, i was thoroughly having a good time.
anyway, just thought that some of you might appreciate a good stress reliever...no worries about group size, velocity, how many points/inches, work, or whatever tie has been binding you...it's like discovering something incredible for the first time, only it's always been there, and i've been too tied up to notice.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death. It is much more important than that.

Going "woods crusing", or for going "scouting" is one of the great pleasures of my life. I keep a couple of rifles, or handguns, handy for just such purposes. Packing a handgun while fly fishing is another great form of the same persuasion. Thank you for reminding me. E

Amen! I haven't done that for quite some time myself, and keep thinking I will one of these weekends, but in never seems to happen. Gonna have to make time I think, I grew up doing that, and loved every minute of it. Indeed, one of lifes simple pleasures.

Exactly!
There is no point in having a hobby that causes more stress than it relieves.

Thanks for the reminder. I used to grab a .22 in the winter and track rabbits. I'll have to get the .22 and walk up some chipmunks and reconnect with my youth. THANKS!!

Yeah, that was before "global competition" dictated that "if we're going to compete with the Chinese, we have to work like them".

My Sunday mornig ritual involves driving up to our private range with a friend or two and shooting till I am either out of ammo or I get tired of shooting, which has never happened. There is nothin formal any thing will do as a target. I like steel best as you can hear a hit. i have been doing this off and on for the last twenty years, best stress reliever around.
Bullwnkl.

I side with Mr.Winkle, steel deights me as well. It is an IMMEDIATE audible response, that dictates your proficiency. If the steel is ringin',bet that the target is singin'!
When at home,I shoot most every day. Currently,I'm at Camp. There too,I try to shoot daily. Some is informal plinking(shooting apples with my pistols),some more "formal"(punching paper at 300yds).
Despite the difference in aptitude required for each discipline, all hone my meager skills. Depending upon weather,we have informal target competitions nightly(after chow). It is GREAT stress relief and an invaluable aid,in sharpening Hunting prowess.
If EVERYONE had a good 10/22,there wouldn't be ANY stress,in this World.............
