I wanted to get a 338 ME, but the funds just arent there. I'm liking the price of this gun, but don't know what caliber to go with, 270 or the 06. Any thoughts good or bad about this gun, for Elk, Deer, and maybe a Moose some day? Which caliber would you choose (for elk and deer right now)? Thanks

I have the Marlin in 270 WCF and I also own two 30-06 bolt rifles. It doesn't matter which one you get!

very satisfied with the one in 270 I picked up...

LF, If you like the 338 ME here is an idea for you: Buy the Marlin short instead of the long. Pick up a Savage 10 barrel chambered to 338 Fed (the ballistic twin to the 338 ME) and install: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=179678I did this w/ a Savage 110 270 WCF to 338-06 A-Square and I'm a mechanical MORON who can change oil and, if everything is perfectly ok, brakes (but just barely). If I can do it, anybody can. The shank diameter and threads are identical between the Savage 10 and the Marlin. In addition to the barrel you'll need a nut wrench ($23): http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=288765and go/no-go gauges, $22.50/ea. Shoot the heck out of whatever you get the rifle chambered to originally and buy those components peice-meal, and then at some point you'll be ready for something more along the lines of what you'd wanted all along. Just a suggestion...
