Hey, I'm new to the world of the mighty 45-70 and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on some hunting loads for droppin big hogs. I'm not set up at the moment to do any handloading for this round, so for the time being, I'm stuck to factory loads. I've heard the 405gr jsp from remington is pretty good all around, any thoughts? Thanks!

The 405s are not pretty good, they are REALLY good.

BD, yeah the 405 rems. are ok, but depending on the distance you are shooting, in Texas, you might try a box of Hornady .45-70 leverevolutions. The ones with the gummy tips.

+1 for the 405 grain Remington bullets. I reload them, but they are the same bullets that are in the factory ammo. The punch big holes, and I have never had them fail to drop a hog on the spot.

Thats good to hear, that was kind of my thought behind buying the 45-70, big bullet, big hole! Have you taken many deer with them?

I've used my 45-70 GG on hogs, bear, and 7 head of african plains game. My go to bullet is the 300 gr. nosler part. @ 1950 fps. That being said, I've not shot any deer with the 45-70, because its illegal to use here in Indiana. Whatever load you decide on, for hogs, will put the whoopass on any whitetail you use it on.grin
