That's a very interesting sport. I keep saying I'm gonna go down to the Ft.Benning area and check out one of those long range matches. I'm thinking it would be easy to get hooked on that type of thing. Keep us posted...

Another tool (toy) that I would suggest is a Redding instant indicator die. With this you can set up your full length die so that you just push your shoulders back about .001. You can sort your brass for those pesky ones that spring back and make your bolt tight when you close it. Guarenteed flyers at 1000 yds. The idicator will also let you sort your bullets to determine the length of the bullet from ogive to the base. Also flyers. Just sort your bullets into groups where they all are with a thous or so of each other. The trick is to keep everything the same, each time, every time. It will make you nuts but it really is at least to me the most fun of any of the rifle sports. ( short of hunting) Another thing that has amazed me is how accurate and capable many run of the mill factory rifles can be with just a little tunning. I have seen Remington "stock" Senderos' win relays and be right up there in some pretty big matches.

As far as light and heavy guns go, I more and more see light guns shoot right along with the heavies if they are not in too heavy a caliber. Last year at the World open in Williamsport, Pa. A light gun won both classes as well as the agg. for the entire match. There is something to be said for one rifle/load that you are really familiar with. The caliber that took it all was a 6.5X.284. I have both light and heavy rifles but just might shoot only the light this year. Mine is a .300WSM

I have been using the Stoney Point headspace gauges for several years to set my dies for shoulder setback. For hunting rifles, I aim for .002", and I can usually get the shoulders to within .001" of where I want, depending on the consistency of my sizing technique.

I read about the Redding system and it seemed like it was much slower than the Stony Point system. Do you think the Redding sysetm is more accuracy and consistent than the Stoney Point?

Also, why is the 6.5/284 so popluar, but the straight 284 not?

Given how you sort out your rifles and the accuracy you achieve, you too are an easy target to get "sucked in" to this...............

I dont think that one is more accurate than the other, and for speed I havent used the stoney point so ?? My hunting bullets I push back 2 thous. also. Remenber about checking your bullets also. the stoney point tool may do that as well I am just not familiar with it. the 6.5X284 seems to be balanced as to just enough to get the job done w/o excess recoil and those long 6.5 bullets have high b.c. about like or better than a 200 or 220 gr. 30 w/o the recoil. I dont know why the reg. .284 never really caught on and for that matter you dont see that many 7mms on the line at all, though latley I have seen more. The 6.5X.284 may have started off because it became a factory round with excellent Norma and Lapua brass. I have one in a hunting rifle and really like it. There may be one in my future but right now I am so rifle poor that there wont be any new rifles for a while!

I'm up in the San Jose area, I'p pretty sure I'm limited to a couple of 200yd ranges. Is your range private?

Have you seen anyone shooting a 50 caliber Barrett at 1000 yd match? They are claiming a record group at 1000 yds in their advertising.

Not yet, but I think they are planning a 50 match in Tucson this Oct.
