Just stopped by a friends store and he has a used Remington 788 in .308 win for sale. It has a big old BSA scope on it. Looked like a 50mm objective lens and I think it went up to 24X. It has an aftermarket rubber recoil pad that makes the length of pull a tad too long. Bore is dirty but rifling and crown look excellent.
I had one years ago and loved it's accuracy. (Still have my handload data, too!) I want to get it for my son to teach him long rang shooting.
For $325 plus tax, should I buy it or pass?
Thanks,
Gary

Yes.
You won't be afraid to cut the stock to fit your son either.

I bought a 788 in 243 a couple of years ago for about $400 with a Leupold Vari-X-II 2-7x33 on it. Seems like a fair price. In any case they have a great rep for accuracy and mine has lived up to that rep.

Dave, Even if I was interested in selling my LH 788 in 6mm (which I'm not, at the moment) I doubt it would be worth the hassle to get it across the border. As I understand, the LH 788 in that calibre is scarcer than some other calibres. Good luck in your search. Jerry

I want to spend the next year working with him starting at 400 yards and farther. love your sig line Plinker Was torn between that and "When Bibles are outlawed, only outlaws will have Bibles." Dave There's one on GunBroker as I write this. IMO it's over priced or I would be bidding, not talking about it.

Thanks, Gary Almost always they're tac drivers, even if a little heavy. $325 isn't bad, esp if you parted out the stock, parts to get the donor action - then fairly cheap at that point for a solid action!Does it have the longer barrel for a .308? If so, the price is even better.

Thanks,
Gary The price is good. However, before you plunk your money down, dry fire the rifle several times to see if you can live with the trigger. They are notoriously bad. If you don't like the trigger, Timney makes an aftermarket trigger for it. Not sure of Timney's price, but check it out and plan on including that price in the "buy" equation. 788's have a benevolent habit of being VERY accurate.
