I know this is really gone piss some off but I havent owned near as many differant makes of rifles as many of you. And to some the Win70 is like the epitome of what a gun should be but... I got a bitch to whine about.

I had three Weatherby's before I bought the first of the two win70's I have owned.

But I got spoiled by the bolt throw on the Weatherby. I have tried mutliple scopes on the Win-70 I still own and its harder to work the bolt fast as it is so close to the eyepiece on the scopes you have to be really careful and hold the bolt funny to keep from whacking your hand on the scope. I have tried sevveral differant Leupold scopes, a Nikon and a Zeis and not much differance.

The Weatherby's bolt didnt throw up nearly as high and it was a piece of cake?

Am I doing something wrong here? What other rifles have the shorter upward bolt rotation like the Weatherby had?

Tex

I believe Browning's have short throws!

Glad to see you're back on your log...

You get use to it.

I always found owning Wbys and Model 70s together was a bit of a pain. If you use one a lot and handling it a lot the other seems real awkward afterwards.

When cycling the action with cartridges in the magazine as disticnt from an emptymagazine the very heavy Wby bolt also seems to give a flywheel effect.

But your M70 will be OK because afterall nealry every shooter in the world is using a 90 degree bolt lift rilfe <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Sako M-75's and other Multi-lug bolt actions have a shorter bolt lift. The trade-off for the shorter bolt lift however is that the effort is greater when you have to recock the mainspring over a shorter arc. If you have always been used to the shorter bolt throw you can bump your fingers. Some rifles with a 90deg throw also can restrict the width of a scope bell that is usable in lower rings. Advantages/Disadvantages to both........DJ

I know exactly what you mean. It's the main reason I prefer my Sako 75's to my Model 70.

Starting with a short throw in something like a WBY or a Browning A-bolt & then going to the long throw action you get with many rifles (not just the M70) would be tough I guess. i'm on the other side of the fence, I've grown acustom to the M70 throw so when I pick up an A-bolt it feels real strange. I question whether or not I have the action open & tend to try to swing it open further before atempting to draw the bolt back. I can't get used to the short throw action, just doesn't feel right. So I know what you're talking about, it's just the opposite for me is all. I passed on a smoking hot deal on a browning A bolt with boss in 338 win mag when I was shopping for an elk rifle last year. I went with an M70 instead because it felt better to me, it's all in what you are used to I guess.

Something clever here.

Well, since you don't like it, I might be willing to relieve you of that hunk a junk for a resonable price (minus the scope). That's assuming it has a right hand bolt, the cal. is .338 Win Mag and it's in good shape. Send me a PM if you're interested. Bear in Fairbanks

Amazingly, I've lived long enough to see a President who is worse than Carter.
And finally,
Gun control means using two hands.
