Actually, Tod.. running a legal naval blockade is an act of war. I'll repeat my posting last night for you so you can run away from it again.

------------------------------

Tod..

Please point out the "international laws" which state that ships announcing they are running a legal blockade must be allowed to enter some pre-defined zone?

Simple request for you to do something beyond echoing the talking points of the Hamas backers.

Here's mine. Please point out the section where is says that nothing can happen in international waters??? Please note point (a).

67. Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they:

(a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture;
(b) engage in belligerent acts on behalf of the enemy;
(c) act as auxiliaries to the enemy s armed forces;
(d) are incorporated into or assist the enemy s intelligence system;
(e) sail under convoy of enemy warships or military aircraft; or
(f) otherwise make an effective contribution to the enemy s military action, e.g., by carrying military materials, and it is not feasible for the attacking forces to first place passengers and crew in a place of safety. Unless circumstances do not permit, they are to be given a warning, so that they can re-route, off-load, or take other precautions.

Well, the German population were primarily Lutheran Christians. Ever read any quotes from Luther regarding the Jews? They are far from flattering. I'll let you google some for yourself.

As for the German hierarchy, they were predominantly pagan.
Quote
Hitler's religious background

He was brought up as a Roman Catholic and was an altar boy.

Later he lapsed but was still much given to talking about 'providence'.

Like all Austrians, Adolf Hitler was raised in the Roman Catholic Church. When he left his native Linz and moved to Vienna in his late teens, he fell in with a crowd of German nationalists who, because of their rabid Judeophobia, insisted that Christianity was a Jewish invention designed to enslave the Aryan race. Because of this influence, Hitler renounced the faith of his childhood though he continued to utilize Christian imagery and vocabulary in his speeches and books. While it is true that the Nazis attempted to revive Germanic/Norse Paganism as the official religion of the state, Hitler himself was never actually a believer like Himmler and other leading Nazis. Nonetheless, Hitler regarded the Catholic Church as his principle ideological foe and ordered attacks on it several times throughout his twelve years in power; this policy was the opposite of the one taken with Protestant (Lutheran) churches in Northern Germany, which Hitler viewed as more flexible to the tenets of Nazism than the institutional Church of Rome. These policies, if anything, reveal that near the end of his life, any affection or solidarity Hitler felt towards the Catholic Church or Christianity in general had long since vanished. Though it is not accurate to say that Hitler was a devotee of any particular religious ideology after he left his childhood home, he did have an unshakeable faith in his own destiny and that of the German people. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_was_Hitler%27s_religious_background

Legal naval blockade. That's the big question.

Under the UN charter, Article 42, only the Security council can determine the legal status of a blockade. Note the signatories of said charter. The US has supported the blockade, while the remaining member of the UN have criticized it and questioned it's legality.

The legality of the blockage is of course a subject that is certainly up for debate. As noted in another post, whatever the case, the recent incident will doubtless have serious negative repercussions for Israel, particularly by further isolating Israel from Turkey. And forcing the US the deal with two important middle eastern allies in conflict with one another.

The only reason Israel is about to continue its provocative course of action is because it can rely on the US to support it. If Israel ddid not have that supprt, it would find itself in a very awkward position.

And has been pointed out by another poster on this board, Israels intrasigent positions has succeeded in noy only gaining it more and more enemies, but Israel has also been extremely effective ib creating more and more regional enemies for the US itself.

Strangely, it seems that there is a large group of people who are also drooling over themselves at the idea of having Israeli pull the US unto another middle eastern conflict - particulrly worrisome when we haven't even dealt with the two in which we are current involved.

In this case the Israelis actually boarded the ship. In the case of the US Navy USS Liberty, they just strafed and bombed the ship (Also in international waters off the Gaza Strip), killing or wounding over half of the more than 300 man compliment. Since it was Israel, we did not even protest and just sent them more military equipment.

The explosions and fires on the Liberty must have REALLY lit up the sky!

Tod, you're just echoing more talking points of the Hamas supporters..

UN charter, Article 42 - did you even READ it, or just find it on DU and echo it here? Tell me where it says that no sea blockades are legal unless the UN Security Council approves it? Article 42 has to do with UN sanctions and blockades. Gaza is not a country or member of the UN, and so it can't hide behind the UN charter.

Israel has followed all legal requirements to enact a sea blockade of a hostile entity.

Quote
Article 42

Should the Security Council consider that measures provided for in Article 41 would be inadequate or have proved to be inadequate, it may take such action by air, sea, or land forces as may be necessary to maintain or restore international peace and security. Such action may include demonstrations, blockade, and other operations by air, sea, or land forces of Members of the United Nations.

Tod you must consider the UN as the authority regarding international affairs. Most nations of the world do not, except when it suits their purposes. I'm surprised you don't understand that, unless, of course, such a ruse supports your purpose.

Are you really alleging Israel has support of the Obama administration? lol

The only reason Israel has established a blockade and is enforcing it, is to intercept weapons and materials designed and destined to kill it's citizens sent from iran and other islamist haters of all things Jewish.

That would be hard to do.

What Israel needs to do, is a lot of vermin control in Gaza and the West Bank; with full media black-out, and the gloves off.

And... so... Egypt is starving Gaza for what reasons? They're blockading also, though I know that's inconvenient for you.

And, yes, they've opened the border for several days. Whoopie.

Or maybe the Palestinians could buy food instead of amassing wealth and weapons of destruction while leading their people into starvation and ruin.

And, the attack apparently also hurts Israel - see: http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/...as-weakened-israel-say-experts-1.1032000

Aid convoy attack has weakened Israel, say experts

While Israels deadly assault on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla proved tragic in terms of civilian loss, it could mark a turning point for those living in the war-ravaged region, experts said today.

As public outrage mounted over the attack, the international community called on Israel to explain its use of disproportionate force against the humanitarian workers.

The wide-scale backlash is now expected to intensify pressure on the country to adhere to international law.

Fawaz Gerges, a professor of Middle Eastern politics and international relations at the London School of Economics, said the events of the past 24 hours had left Israel in a much weaker position than it found itself in only two days ago.

The country will now have to listen to voices from around the world calling for an end to the siege on Gaza, he said.

I think the tragedy and massacre will basically serve as a catalyst to mobilise public opinion in the international community.

The killing of those activists, sad though it is, could easily serve as a framework to really bring about solidarity on the international stage and force Israel to abide by international law.

And he expressed hope that the situation in the region could be improved, insisting it would now be hard for Israel to maintain the status quo on the Gaza border.

What we have now is a dramatically different situation - Israel has come under scrutiny.

More and more voices have joined in this international campaign to end the brutal siege of Gaza, he said.

Israel is today in a much more fragile position than it was before the killing of the human rights activists.

This has mobilised the international community in a way that no other action has done.

Ahron Bregman, a specialist in the Arab-Israeli conflict at Kings College London, said the countrys actions constituted a huge victory for Hamas.

But he stressed that the latest assault could bring about positive change.

Israel is becoming more and more isolated, he said.

I think it will find it very difficult to continue and maintain the siege on Gaza.

The world is becoming very, very impatient with Israel, and Israel is playing into the hands of the world.

He said there was growing pressure on the country to behave as you would expect a nation to behave in an international arena.

This is likely to intensify once the personal stories of those caught up in the attacks begin to emerge.

Prof Gerges added: This is the beginning of a major, major campaign.

It is a turning point in the way that the international community deals with Israel.

But he said it may be some time before visible improvement is achieved in the region.

It could take a year or so but the truth is that Israel has come under considerable pressure from some of its supporters and its allies, he said.

Israel will have to listen.

And those peaceful residents of Gaza just sit back and continue to starve... NOT.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100530/wl_mideast_afp/mideastconflictgaza

Quote
On Saturday, Palestinian militants in the densely populated enclave had fired two rockets at southern Israel, causing neither casualties nor damage, the military said.

The blockades aren't going to stop, because Israel knows the rocket attacks would become impossible again.

And the residents of Gaza are NOT starving. There are plenty of ways to get food and medicine into Gaza via land routes, and your tax dollars are being used to ship stuff in every day thanks to Bammy. In fact, the ships were to told to enter port so the contents could be inspected and transferred into Gaza via these land routes, but they refused. Politics is more important than actual relief efforts, ya know.

Google "Israeli spies in the U.S." - quite a tradition.

The Israeli government cares only about itself and their interests in the middle east, they infiltrated the U.S. political system years ago, and we have been their cash cow for decades. Not all Jews support the Israeli government. Those gentiles in the U.S. who blindly support the socialist state of Israel, and place their interests above the U.S. are shlemiels, but at this stage, they have no choice.

Hi Sam - Im not at all anti-Semitic, but I want Israel to be responsible for its acts. The completely unprovoked attack by Israel in international waters of a US Navy ship (USS Liberty) that killed 34 US Navy sailors and wounded an additional 171 has never been explained. Israel has always been given a pass on these things and it might get another pass with this latest attack.

BTW, in the Liberty case, Israel has long claimed that it was a misunderstanding and that they did not recognize the US flag. In fact, the Liberty flew 3 US flags and the Israeli fighters shot the first two down; after each was shot down, another flag was raised; the final flag was badly holed by canon fire, but stayed aloft. It is on display at the NSAs National Cryptologic Museum at Ft. Meade MD, holes and all.

Also, Israels continued appropriation of Arab lands through illegal settlements just continues to throw gasoline on a fire and does nothing to promote peace in the region. I am afraid that we may get dragged into this morass deeper than we want.

djs, it was 43 years ago and in the midst of their 6 day war. Got to let go of it sometime...

We've made far worse mistakes. Remember the Iranian civilians killed by us during the Iran-Iraq war? 290 innocent people on a jetliner.. Confusing an Airbus and an F14 ain't easy. We never admitted responsibility or apologized for killing those folks, either.

Israel has had a very extensive and lengthy intelligence operation against the US for decades. Jonathan Pollard is but one Israeli spy who is in prison and Israel continues to ask for his release (over then objection of the FBI and the Intelligence Agencies his wife is already settled in Israel). The Israeli Air Force Colonel who was his handler was punished on his return to Israel for this spying by being promoted to General.

As is pointed out in your Google reference (Israeli spies in the U.S.), Pollard is hardly alone. Israel and her friends in the US have continuously placed our national interests and defense behind Israels, even though many are US born citizens. This Fifth Column has damaged US security interests and is adversely affecting our ability to pursue our own national interests.

All here should Google Israeli spies in the U.S.
