Live in upstate NY...

My dad had some health issues where he was laid up end of April, He would sit and watch TV and watch out the upstairs window. Well, he got to watching the Turkeys and noticed they were always out in the field by 6:30am feeding on old corn and new hay seed. He also notices that the Turkeys are flying down from roosting in some of the trees around the hedgerow. So he set up a blind on the hedgerow back by where they were feeding (neighbor set it up as he watched from the window).

So opening day we get out in blind by 5:40am. he has to sit very gingerly and after about 10 minutes he says "don't know how long I'll make it this morning...still not up to snuff."

I give 3 soft warbles on the box call at 6 and I get the confirmation gobbles from 3 different turkeys. One flies down immediately and is strutting just outside my dad's window (he didn't bring his gun since he couldn't shoot yet). A couple of hens fly down to the field pretty close to us and start feeding and by 6:15 all three Toms were strutting around in the open. I had my pick of the bunch and shot him at 6:20am. Got a 9 1/2 inch bearded Tom with 1 1/4" spurs. Dressed out at 19 pounds.

I looked at my dad after I shot and said "After weeks of talking about turkey hunting, this hunt kinda seems anti-climatic..."

But it was the perfect hunt for both me and my dad...who is almost fully recovered.

There is room for all of God's creatures...right on my plate next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

sounds like a lot of fun. Glad you got to share it with your dad. Glad to hear he's doing well too.

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Congratulations on a successful hunt (in a couple of ways too).
