I think the Marlin R&D guys are too busy working with Hornady to create more new cartridges that aren't needed and don't offer any real benefit over existing cartridges. What does the new for 2009 338 Marlin Express offer over the 338 Federal?
As long as there's still lead in the air, there's still hope!

Good question i had not thought of , Not personaly hugly intereted in either cartridge, but i supose the one advantage would be thet the .338 marlin is not to powerfull for the more traditional style of levers. The .338 federal is a good round , but personaly if my .308 seems to small, I want somthing bigger than the .338 federal or .358 win too. mabye a whelen or a 338 win . ...tj3006

Here it is: http://townermfg.com/about/The gun is a bit of a dog in the photos, but it is intreging. I think a short repeating 500 S&W carbine would be a hoot. But, $1600.00, whew! Probably it would be a better idea to get a pump 454 Casull, or pray for a carbine 460 S&W.

an AR-15 or MP5 in 500 S&W would be Amazing too That's a pretty easy one. Check out the Alexander Arms .50 Beowulf. It's a different case but the same ballistics. In a bolt gun the WSSM action is the perfect length for a .500 Smith and the bolt face seems to match too. The problem is finding someone to make the barrel without it becoming a $1600 rifle, also and someone else to install it.

What does the new for 2009 338 Marlin Express offer over the 338 Federal? Big bore performance in a lever gun that does not like 60,00 psi loads. There is a role for the 338 Marlin, but it is not for everyone.

For those of us that love a traditional lever gun, the new cartridges like the .308 and .338 Marlin Express are great new additions.
If all I shot were bolt guns, I wouldn't care about the new Marlin rounds or the 338 Federal.

Still the Marlin action could handle a larger round based on the 444 marlin case. At the same pressure as their new rounds the larger round could develop higher velocities.

If anyone is interested I am in the process of doing a group buy on the Towner 500 S&W pump carbine. I should have the first one in about a week. PM for details.

Wanted to get this one back up because the .500 S&W pump is getting picked up again and hopefully everyone who wanted one will get back on board and support it. Its being revived by Matt Burkett and you gotta feel its going to be an awesome peice of kit when made to his standards and we are supporting him in that. I want to import it to Australia as a "specialist" hog rifle although it will obviously cover pretty much the full range of game available. Check it out at www.predatortactical.com

I would be very careful if I were you.Wild West Guns even tried and made the 500 Smith in a beefed up leveraction and it didn't hold up to the pressures....Everyone try's but until just recently, none have held up to the pressure.... Then I could say no one thought you could make a 454 Casull in a leveraction, but they did at 65,000 PSI/SAAMI.But others failed miserably. I would be real hesitant until it is tried and proven and just not another idea in a long line of them. The data for a 500 Smith in a 22" barrel does not not meet the ballistics of a 45-70/.450 Marlin..Surprised me also. 22' Barrel data for the 500 Smith! Just my opinion..... Jayco

What does the new for 2009 338 Marlin Express offer over the 338 Federal? The ability to safely fire factory ammo in a marlin 336.

Don't forget the model 1895 is the "Beefed Up" version of the 336 as the Big Bore is the "Beefed Up" version of the old '94 action which was more successful than Marlins attempt.

Jayco How do you define "successful"? None of the cartridges the Big Bore showcased, the 307, 356 and 375 Winchester are still chambered and the 94 is no longer made (no, I don't count Japanese reproductions). The 1895 and 444 Marlins are still going strong.
