Just got a new to me Savage 99H in .303 Savage. The rifle is less than a collector speciman but I think I will enjoy it. Wood ser#'s don't match the rifle but it is of the correct type. I see GUN PARTS offers a straight grip walnut stock with butt plate for the 99. It mentions something about different tang lengths on older or early 99's. My H was made in 1928. Would it have a different length tang than later ones? It appears to be the same length and style as my '54 vintage EG. Any ideas? I don't need the stock yet but I thought I may purchase it for future consideration.

90,000 and earlier have a longer tang.

What is the serial range of your wood? Is it walnut or non walnut?

I think the stock from Gun Parts is just a stock...not to original style.

I have been told the stock wood is "fruitwood". I will get the stock wood ser# when at home. I see Boyds offers the the stock a substantially lower cost and also offers a 11 1/4 " fore end. Wiil that fore end fit? The rifle has a round barrel.

Trapper:
I just ordered a stock set from the boyd boys yesterday. After a phone call to them I found that the barrel channel for the fore end is cut undersize so it can be fit to skinny barrels like my post war, pre mil 99F with it's featherweight barrel. The fore end they sell has a rounded tip...........like the 99F or the 99E (no schnabel). Delivery is 4 to 6 weeks out because they have no stocks in stock and are setting up for a production run. You could probably get it to fit your H, but it will be more involved if you have a barrel band. Give them a call, as you have found the phone number is on their site at www.boydboys.com <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Whats wrong with the stock you have?

On the forearm, you need to verify the hole location in the replacement wood and the new forearm might need a longer screw than was used on the 99-H.

The stock wood has been repaired with expoxy. It was well done and is invisible from the outside. The LOP is just too short for me. The stock has been sanded and the metal is slightly proud of the wood. My fore end has a 6.5" hole spacing my 99 EG has 6" spacing. I can live with the fore end but the stock has to be replaced for my comfort. I will call boyds on Monday and see if they can drill the fore end hole where I need it. Longer screw should not be a problem. My 99H has no barrel band just a screw. Does the 99H have the same barrel contour as the F? Thanks for all the help and info.
