I have got an older 700 long action with a standard bolt face and thinking about what to do with it:

A. Do a lightweight with 21 inch #2, Edge or Bansner in .25-06, .270, .280 (or AI) or .30-06. Luepold 6x36

B. Do something along the lines of the "halibut" rifles that used to posted here. Say a #3 in standard McMill Classic. I might could do a Sako Hunter instead of Rem Classic on this though. Maybe something with turrents.

C. Do something a little more long-range oriented. Say a quality #4 in a standard McMillan Sako Hunter in .30-06 or a .280 AI. See B above regarding scope.

I have other rifles and most everything I own tends to be lightweight (i.e. 7.7 pounds with scope or less, including my .375), so maybe time for more of a medium-weight rig.

Whatever it is, must balance at or near the front guard screw. Thoughts?

If you already have the lighter carry rifles covered, I would vote for a longer range rig. Something with a bit more weight, but not too heavy to carry if you need to. I'd go with a fluted 26" #4 in the new McMillan Remington Hunter pattern, 4.5-14x40 scope with CDS or M1 elevation turret.

Calibre depends what you are going to point it at, but I like the idea of a 25-06 or a 280.

Once you hunt/carry/kill with a lightweight rifle, everything else just seems to sit in the safe.

Why is it called a double u, should'nt it be called a double v?

Probably wouldn't do a Swede for this one, but might do a 6.5-06...

That'd work too. Remington hit a homerun with the KS. That stock (the McMillan version) and that barrel contour are perfect. I slapped my PacNor No. 1 barreled 280AI in a KS takeoff and it's one of my favorite rifles.

The Brown Precision stocked KS's are pretty nice too.

Gotta love that barrel contour.

Thats what I'd do.

A nice lightweight job.

Put a #2 contour 23" SS bbl on and a TI stock with a 2.5X8 Leupold with DD's and it would be awesome.

I have several lightweight rifles as well so my latest build is a #4 countour Bartlein with a standard weight McMillan Stock in BDL style. It will have a 25" finish barrel length and will be in .280AI. Being built by Jim Borden. It should weigh in about 8.75-9lbs with scope when finished. Not too heavy to carry but enough weight to shoot long range. I've got a new Leica Scope to go on it and I'm waiting on them to get their turret system finished to add to it.

I have a 280AI w/3.5 X 10 Zeiss Z-600 reticle, McMillan edge stock, Rifle Basix trigger (Much like your Option A) that weighs under 7 lbs. empty with sling. Shoots great with either AI loads or with off the shelf 280 Rem. Great .284 bullet selection that will take you from coyotes to Elk.

Have a safe full of great rifles but this one sits on the front row!!!!
