Started forming cases for the 25-284 using virgin 284 win cases in the Redding 25/284 FL size die.

I adjusted the die just to size the neck and then readjusted the die. Well, the first case sized half the neck, so I readjusted the die, lubed the case and ran it through the die. Second try I got a bulge 2/3 of the way down the neck. The third try with an adjusted die colapsed the shoulder.

I thought one pass through the die would yield a finished 25-284 case, this happen on three cases. So I stopped.

Any suggestions?

If you have a standard seating die, run the case through it first and then through the FL die.Rick.

Anneal the neck?

With virgin W/W hulls,Hornady OneShot lube and Redding FL 25-284 die,it's a one pass operation for me.

The suggestion to use the seating die as an intermediate step,is a good one...................

I had the same problems you are experiencing. Tried various lubes and it didn't make a difference. I had less than a 50% success rate.
I called Redding and they say it is right on the bordline of wether or not the 284 case can be sized in one step to 25-284 and from the feedback they get it seems it is a 50/50 proposition if it works or not.
They recommended using the seater die first and that put things in the 100% success bracket.

Guys, I have sized .300 WSM brass to .257 WSM with one pass of a FL die, WITHOUT using the seater. I found the trick was to use Imperial Sizing Die Wax on the body and dip the neck and shoulder in a container filled with moly coated #9 shot, being sure to get the moly inside the neck. I collapsed a few shoulders until I got it right, but it works nearly 100% now. As a side note, I only had .300 WSM brass to begin with, I have since gone to .270 WSM and its much easier than the .300--all the .270 brass needs is a shot of the One Shot Case lube.

A 25 sizer was included with my 6mm-284 dies and I also had problems with that first step. I had better luck with once fired 284 brass in the 25 die. I have rebarreled to a 6.5-284 and that sizer works very smooth on new 284 brass. If nothing else works you might try to size to 6.5 first, as it works well with little effort and no scrap. I bulged and caved in a lot of brass trying to step to 25 first using a variety of lubes, etc. and although once fired worked a little better, I think the 6.5 step then .25 would be my choice if I had another 6mm-284.

Man am I glad I found this site. I recently purchased a 6mm/284. I got my new Redding FL dies in yesterday. I have been having problems neck sizing the .284 Win cases. Matter of fact, I'm 0 for 10. I had a gunsmith tell me that he hasn't had any problems going from .284 to .243 in a single pass through his Redding dies? Maybe there something the guy isn't telling me? I will try the seating die first next time. Also, the Annealing process, is this a fast heating of the case and rapid cool down in a water bath? If so, or not what is the process? I really appreciate this advice.

Annealing is not heating the entire case. Do a search of this site and you will find plenty about the process.Rick.

I figured it was heating the portion of the case to be re-formed. I will take your advice and search the site for the actual process data. Thank you for your time and good shooting.
