Evidentally Sako has discontinued the 7STW and RUM. They are floating around at a pretty tempting price.
I need to know a rough "total cost" to convert one to something BIG!
Would all it amount to - screwing in a new barrel chambered for a 358 STA?
What about a .338 based on the STW.
What barrel would you fellows recommend. Total cost? And salvage recovery sale of initial take off stainless barrel (if any)?
Thanks!

yup. spec a new barrel in like profile and have it installed. you just have to remember if you go real big the contour might have to be larger than the original.... woofer

My STA is a CM Douglas. I've got no complaints with it at all.

I am no expert on gunsmithing. I have been looking into rebarreling a 416 Remington. I believe you will find that the 7mm STW and the 416 Remington are based on the 8mm Remington Magnum's case. All of these cartridges are of similar length. Whether the larger bullets will cause feeding issues is for someone else to answer.

What about the .338 caliber? I'm sure somebody has done it- just not sure who!
Wonder what it is called??
And what the case capacity increase would be over the Winchester magnum.

I think you should look at the 340 Weatherby. Same case size (I think), same length.

cheapest route to a 338 would be the rem UM in 338. find out what threads the sako has ( i have no idea ). might score a new take-off in correct chambering................. woofer

With your magazine and STW bolt face it would just be a rebarrel to go to .375 H & H Mag. or if you wanted something a little flatter shooting a .300 or .340 Weatherby Mag. I think the RUM bolt face is different.

What about a .338 based on the STW. I had my 8mmremmag converted to a 338x8mmremmag due to the limited selection of 8mmbullets several years ago.I found the cartridge to be a good performer delivering 3100fps with 210gr partitions.I had my own reamer made up and still have it.

Sure sounds like a .338 Swamp Donkey, but I would bet that particular wheel has been re-invented a few times <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Rebarrel it to 340 Wby. It will work without any alterations or modfications, and will be A LOT easier to sell than a wildcat, when you decide to do so.

One more voice in favor of the 340Wea. No alterations needed. No magazine work, no boltface work. Ammo is off the shelf, though a little spendy. Way better resale value.
The 8mmRem mag, 7mmSTW, 300Wea, and 340Wea are all simply full length 300H&H brass necked to different calibers and improved to higher capacity chamber dimensions. You can actually make any of these from 300H&H brass by fire forming in the appropriate rifle after neck sizing.

Hey, I have a switch barrel 700 in 7STW and the other is a 358STA. Best combo ever ! Took a 60" moose in alaska (did I already say this?) .Both cal. are super accurate and very hard hitting. Easy to load too. Charles

Thanks! When you say 'big', I have to assume you're thinkin' along the lines of a .40 cal or bigger, at LEAST a .375 H&H. The .416 Remmie would be great except your stock will have to be reworked, as mentioned above. If you don't mind a wildcat then fully consider that .358 STA. For it's size, it's a real thumper. You can get a contour that's not going to require stock work and yet have enough ooomph to take anything in NA..

It would be tough to go wrong with the 340 or the 358. MidwayUSA stocks ammo for both if you don't reload. I think A-Square's the only choice for the 358STA. But Federal, A-Square, Weatherby(of course), and Nosler are all loading the 340 now.

Don't rebarrel it...have it reborred to a .338 whatever. by http://www.cutrifle.com/index.html. First class work and a lot simpler then rebarreling. Lefty
