Lovemy99 There are 2 egg fest somewhat close to you
August 14th in Louisville Ky and August 28 in Indy. Not sure if thats close enough for a drive up or not. If it is it would be worth your time to check it out, lots of good food and free advice. Typically you can contact the sponsors of those events and get on a list to buy a "cooked on once" demo egg. I cooked at one a few weeks ago and he was selling large demo's for $688 out the door, that included an accessory kit, a grille tool, an ash tool, a nest and a bag of lump that's a typical price around here for demo's.

As for must-have accessories...you can cook a LOT of different foods with the tools in the package I mentioned above. The one accessory I wouldn't be without is a platesetter (+/-$35). With a large egg and cooking ribs a rib rack helps, I use the stainless steel one from Lowes ($15) and its very solid. For long cooks I like my Maverick ET-73 but I cooked for years without one, just makes it easier. Pizza Stones are great if you do pizza or bake. The raised and multi-tiered racks are great but not a must have. The $100 thermometer is a Thermapen and is certainly not a must have by any means but it is one of those things kinda like good glass you don't realize the value until you actually try it.

What comes standard with the BGE? What are necessary accessories?

The BGE includes the egg itself, firebox, grate, fire ring, grid, temp gauge, ceramic top, ceramic feet, instructional dvd and manual.

IMO you will need the following to get up and cooking:
Nest or Table
Daisy Wheel Top (my dealer included it in the base)
Plate Setter
Raised Grid
Ash Tool
Grid Tool

The dealer I bought from included all of the above as a package plus the wooden shelves, fire starters and 20 pounds of charcoal. Like any other guy hobby there are lots of other bells and whistles that can be added down the road, but whats listed above will get you up and Egg'in.

The special the Porter's has right now is $999 which includes a large egg, egg nest, side tables, ash tool, bag of charcoal, daisy wheel and a electric starter. They will swap the electric starter for a plate setter if I pay the difference of $20 or so. Which I would do. they also deliver for $40 if they have another delivery in my area. I would wait for that if not too long a wait. They assemble everything.

I think a raised grid and grid tool would be a good idea.

Got your message and will shout back at ya' today. For a raised grid I would consider something from the supplier listed below. The little flimsy ones they sell at BGE are frustrating. The work but can be a PITA.

I have a lot of this/Sandbagger's stuff and it's all hand welded in the USA. Well made and guaranteed. I should post a pic of all the accessories I have. Working on it.

+1 on the Ceramic Grill Store raised grid. You won't be disappointed with the quality of any of their products, good stuff and they stand behind it.

I purchased a BGE today and it'll be delivered Friday. My uncles and cousins swear by them. The biggest change for me will be to "slow down and grill". Most of my meals hit the table in less than a hour due to time and (kids) restrictions. What I got was the large BGE, nest, plate setter, ash tool and cookbook, that my uncle insist I get. I'm relying on you guys for some of the recipes. The pic's I'm seeing make me drool.

You're way looks like it worked perfectly on the ribs...however, me thinks you are making it to difficult. I peel the membrane, rub, light the charcoal, throw beer in the fridge (very important step :)), then throw them on when she hits 325. Leave it alone for 3 hours or so, yank them out and eat. Beats anything you can buy at any restaurant within 100 miles.

There are lot's and lots of things you can cook on your egg that will come off in way less than an hour. Remember it's not just a smoker, you can run the temp up as high as you like (and higher than you would ever need). You can grill, bake, cook direct, indirect, etc,etc.

Welcome to the BGE cult bam. Bow cult is the right word for sure. Anytime we can help you have worlds of good advice at the ready from the fire. The BGE forum is also a great place to cruise. Those guys are just plain silly sick in love with their BGEs.

That's the truth. With all the advice and pointers I have received from you, dux, RBH and Stetson it's like I had cooked on the BGE for a year before I had even lit my first batch of lump. You guys are the greatest!

Called the place I have been trying to work a deal with. Lady I was working with is on vacation until next week. I have one more offer for her, since they will be in town doing an event the 2nd week in August I am asking for free delivery. Seems fair to me.
