Hi Drew,

I've seen some threads about lettering, what exactly is that all about and what does it accomplish. The gun is old and grey but the wood is darn near perfect and shoots great as well. I don't think it was fired much at all. Gun was produced in 1910.

Savman,

You can send a request to the Savage Factory Historian to provide you the details of the original factory specifications. A gun with a 30" barrel would be custom ordered and might have some interesting information and should also provide provenance to the gun. Look in the "sticky" thread labeled "Misc. Good Info"

Only other 30" gun that I know about belongs to another member here who is also in Canada. *unless, is one of the muskets that Fug had at the Fest a few years ago 30"??)

In regards to your comment about wanting to see a 358RS... there is a lot of arguements that despite the factory catalogs and Murray's book, there exist no distinguishably RS post WWII... nothing is set in stone yet as far as I know, no one that thinks they own a post war RS has ever tried to get it lettered as generally speaking very little info exist for these guns.

Savman1, if you wander over to www.savagela.org I think there is a scan of a factory letter in the pics section. It'll give you an idea of what it would say on a letter for your rifle.

Post-war 99RS's were surely sold, there's no way they'd run something like 10 years of catalogs and price lists with them but not have them for sale.

The problem is in identifying them.. Only difference between a post-war 99R and 99RS is a tang sight, and those could be easily added later - or removed. And I'm not sure that the model was written in the ledgers in the 50's, so even a factory letter may not prove that one is a 99RS.
