I have a buddy thats looking at this rifle and for the price may pick one up myself if I hear good feedback. Does anyone have one of these? I know its no Number 1 but how does it stack up against others in its price class?

My uncle has sold quite a few through his shop. He had trouble getting scope mounts for them for awhile. That may have been fixed by now, anyway the one that I shot was a 30/06 and at 100yds with cheapo ammo it shot very well. Wasn't too clunky and seemed to work ok.

I have a Baikal 12 gauge single shot that looks much like it and operates well. Thanks schoolmarm I was hoping this wasnt about to be a flaming session. IMO they look alot better than handi rifles or the Rossi single shot.

I was thinking about buying one of these in 7.62 x 39 just for grins. They are cheap enough, and if it won't shoot, I'll unload it on someone else. (Pun Intended)

I havent seen them chambered for that cartridge. As cheap as it is itll be no big loss if it sucks. What about the scope mount issues?

That might have been before Rem took over Baikal, we had to rigger rig a base to fit. He finally found something in Brownells that would fit. Have you looked at the CVA break barrel. There is a store near here that is selling them and they are slicker than cow slobber. .35 whelen CVA's and Encores are getting to be big sellers here because you can use one during primative deer deason.

The cheap CVA is impossible to find around here, the only places Ive even heard of them is Academy Sports. How are they using them in primitive weapons?

That might have been before Rem took over Baikal, Remington never "took over Baikal".. They just imported some of their stuff for a while and had their name stamped on it.. They were not even the exclusive importers for Baikal guns during the time they imprted them.. Anyway, that is all over with now. No more Russian made "Remingtons".

Here's where I saw them podunk. Looks like they are trying to get rid of them. I guess Remington has disowned them now since I don't see anything on their site about them. I'm sure they were made in the Russian round. http://www.remington-spartan.com/category/940-Remington_Spartan_18.aspx

In Miss. you can use a single shot rifle so long as it has an exposed hammer and is .35 or larger. Thus the NEF's in .444 and .45/70 are selling like hotcakes. I can't use my .35Whelen #1 but I can use a NEF in .35. My hunting buddy is using a NEF .44mag. I hunt with a Browning 85 in 45/70.
