I am looking at a 4 runner that is for sale. It has a overheating issue. The cooling system has been pressure tested,
heat cores replaced, new radiator, head gasket....ect. It overheats slowly, and will cool when the heater is turned on for a moment then the temp. will begin to rise again? What do you mechanics think?

Thanks.

it is a '97 SR5. All the obvious solutions have had new parts thrown at it but no fix.

4 banger or V6?

Could be the water pump is starting to go south, or a problem with the head gasket.

Water pump blades worn down or broken off, foreign object stuck in a water passage, the timing is too far advanced.

Best I can come up with.

Air dam blocked? Bumper grease low? You might need to replace the rims with 28 inchers, mo betta air flow under the cab.

Unless you want a fixer upper, I'd walk from it. Just because the parts were replaced, doesn't mean they were replaced properly. If the head(s) were warped and not ground flat, even with a new head gasket you can be getting combustion products into the cooling system.

Either that or the coolant system just isn't flowing properly and there are obstructions somewhere in the system.

I'm learning to loathe working on vehicles, so I'd say just keep looking, you should be able to find a runner w/o signifigant problems and it would be worth paying a bit more for a car w/o problems.

was the radiator cap replaced? I had that happen to me before, and it was a slow climb on the temp till it red lined.

Is there a way to check for proper flow? Maybe pulling the return hose and check to see
if coolant is moving fast? I dont know.

yes,I have seen several toyotas that the intake manifold leaks, and the engine slowly overheats.Try spraying starting fluid around the intake gasket when the engine is running. If the engine revs up,the gasket is leaking.Or maybe its a muffler bearing.
