looking at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two

quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.

Anyways, I know lots of smart kids, we got some at our school taking AP Physics, and AP Calculus. Some of these kids are passing AP (College level) Spanish in the eighth grade. 'Course, these kids usually don't end up working behind a cash register....

I have run into a LOT of those types in the last few years. They are the ones that got a "Certificate of Attendance" rather than a diploma! I have also witnessed this phenomena repeatedly over the past 10-12 years. Has as much to do with computer cash registers and credit/debit cards as well as education methinks.

I think it has something to do with:
1- parents out scoring another high instead of participating in their children's education.
2- A single parent out trying to support the kid or kids instead of.........
3- Two parents out working, trying to win the race with the Joneses, or buy more toys instead of..........

I have recently discovered that I am one of these types, despite all my previous arrogance to the contrary.

Oh, I can make change all right, but these last few weeks I've been pursuing an instrument rating for my pilot's license, and it's amazing some of the stupid crap I get myself into when I have to do rapid math.

Inbound course for runway 22 is 218 degrees; therefore, outbound course is...what? C'mon, c'mon, hurry up quick: the ADF needle is beginning to swing already! What are you supposed to turn to? And besides, you're low and descending: if you don't do something right frickin' now, you're gonna bust your minimum and hose the approach.

Inbound course for runway 22 is 218 degrees; therefore outbound course is 038 degrees. (Whoa--that was easy!) Current heading is 120 degrees, so we're going to blow straight through the outbound course at an intercept angle of practically 90 degrees, which means we'll have to turn back and intercept it. So...we can set up a nice gentle 30-degree intercept angle by turning to 068 instead of 038, right? Cool. [a decent interval later] Gee, why isn't the needle centering? I've been flying outbound for nearly two minutes already, 30 degrees to the right of the desired course, and the needle is still stubbornly hard right. (Answer: you should have turned to 008, you dolt, not 068. You're on a diverging course and the needle will never center until you fly clear around the world and back; but you've forgotten that because you're flying FROM the VOR with a TO indication, you get reverse sensing on the needle.)

I started my time to the Missed Approach Point at the Final Approach Fix like I was supposed to. I meant to stay at 90kt, which according to the chart here means that I reach the MAP at 3:36 on the clock. However, in the process of paying attention to all my other needles here, I suddenly notice my airspeed at 110kt and suspect it's probably been there for the past twenty or thirty seconds. Now I'll get to the MAP sooner than 3:36, so that if I wait to go missed until the clock says 3:36 I might well hit a mountain or a tower or something. So if I slow back down to 90kt right now, when should I go missed? Oh yeah, and hurry, because the clock says 2:56--no, 2:57--right now.

Pretty simple stuff when you're sitting in front of a computer and have a hand free for a calculator; but I really suck at it when I'm in turbulent clouds just trying to keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down with the bumps making my charts slide all over the place, trying to digest the rapid-fire radio call I just heard that might have been for me or might not have--and sometimes with my instructor Scott adding a deliberate distraction or two ("You know, Barak, I haven't come up with a good way to say this, but over the past few weeks I've become really attracted to you, and I can see you feel the same about me...").

Maybe I'm just not cut out for this.

I wanna know how Big Stick can afford all those rifles and leupie 6x42s w/ only $20 profit in a load?
