I mean seriously. He knows I'm a big saver and looking forward to retirement in comfort in a few years. There I am minding my own business and he says, "Hey Al, I've got something you'll like." Rem 700 light varmint like new in .221 fireball, a set of Redding dies, mounted older Leupold 12X, two boxes of factory ammo and 30 rounds of his handloads for $750. What was I to do but bring it home? Why does the man hate me so?

I'd be willing to take that rig off of your hands for $775, just so you can get your retirement fund back on track.

I got to be good friends with the owner of a local, small gun shop. The owner used to carry quite a few Ruger No. 1's but he never had one in 45/70. One day I casually mentioned to him that I sure would like to at least handle a No. 1 in 45/70. You know, just to see if I would like it.
Well, a couple of days later I came in again and guess what was sitting up there on the rack. The owner looked sideways at me and cracked a little grin and 30 minutes later my wallet was a might bit lighter than when I walked in the shop.

I think your gunsmith and my friend that owns a gunstore/sign making business might be related. I get that same message fairly often: "hey George, Ernie said...."
Take it out and smoke some ground hogs, it's the right thing to do.

Man, what a deal! Especially for that price with a 12x Leupold! Those scopes are really getting pricy, if you can find one that is.

Think I'll keep the rifle for a bit (at least) but might be interested in swapping the scope out for a 6X Leupold that better fits a walk around varmint rig for me. I'm going to take it to our place in KY this weekend and see if I can whack a groundhog or yote with it and see what I think.

Well he might be looking out for your best interest since your retirement fund won't pay you that well. He could realize with all that free time in retirement you will need something to do. He might realize that he needs to sell this rifle and he knows you won't let him keep it. Lastly he just might realize you don't have your share of firearms yet an is willing to help you get there.
In a free country the government doesn't fear its citizens and there firearms. In a crocked government everything is up to be removed even the citizens if they truly believe in freedom.

WOW, I wish that I could just mind my own business and come up with a deal like that!!!!! Around here people that "Mind their own business" wind up in the ER stabbed, beat up and shot! When asked what they were doing they almost always say "I was walking down the street minding my own business when....." I know this because I work in the ER....
Heck of a deal!!! Congrats!

Nice find, Allen. Do you have woodchucks in your part of the country, or some variety of ground squirrel, perhaps? If so, they had better watch out...

Groundhogs Yotes, muskrats and other critters should be fun this weekend at our place in Ky. I was reading up on loads last night and a 40 gr bullet at 3500 fps has all kinds of uses I'm thinking.

Pugs;
Swap that stock out for a Ti SAUM or an LSS (brown, not grey), Talleys, and a 6x42 FX-III.
Thank/hate me later.
