Last year Mad Dog and a few of you guys helped me identify my old Stevens 22 as a model 418 Walnut Hill Jr. Target Rifle (the cheaper and lighter sister gun to the 417 Walnut Hill)--so turning to you guys again.
I'm looking for a picture of the original factory standard front sight that was a Lyman 104 patridge(some say "partridge") style front sight from the reference books. All I have is a pic in some repro literature that isn't very clear, but it does seem to taper up from the front to the rear, and would be std. 3/8 dovetail. Been looking for a year now and cant find the sight or even a picture of one, even checked the guys at ASSRA and the sight collectors on the Savage web site too--no luck. Seems every 418 out there has had a Lyman 17A put on it, including mine. A pic would help me identify one on fleabay or GB,as many of the old sights don't have model numbers stamped on them.
Anyone have an old 418 (not the 418 1/2 that had a gold bead front sight) with the original sight?
Here's a pic of the gun, wearing the original rear Lyman 144 and the optional Lymnan 48L rear, and the Lyman 17A front. The gun dates from 1932

The sight book states that the 104 was only used on the 418 and 416-2 from 1932 to 1948... so probably not many out there.

99trix has a 1941 and 1942 Steven catalog for sale...might be worth a look.

Sight book also states that Stevens front sight dovetails were 5/16" or 7/16". I don't know if that still holds true after bought by Savage. Do you know that your dovetail was originally 3/8"?

Savage...never say "never".

The dovetail was/is definitely not 7/16"--the 17A on there now is a 3/8 dovetail. Doesn't look like it was 5/16ths and then enlarged later on for the 17A either.
Have had a few gunsmiths look at it over the years and they have said it looked to be originally a 3/8" as well.

Thanks for the tip on the 104 fitting a 416-2.

99Trix--do your catalogs have a good pic of this model gun pr 416-2? If so, any chance you could scan it and email to me?
