After all the photos and commentary I posted, Ive thought about what the evidence says. Podunk prefers to kill pigs with whatever he has in his hands when pigs are seen. Anything from fish knockers/ mag lites and other blount objects to arrows, spears and other primitive pointy death dealers to rimfires, quarter bores and obscenely huge calibers are adequate for killing pigs as long as one posesses the skill set, mentality and demeanor to kill them in said fashion.
The view one sees is his own Practitioner of the ancient art of skank fu

I seem to use a different firearm everytime I hunt hogs. My Ugartechea SxS slug gun would rank as a favorite as would any number of handguns I hunt. My latest hog taken in March ate a 275 gr WFN from my Old Model Super Blackhawk. My son used a 250 AI with the 100 gr TSX on one much larger than mine, bang, 20 yard run and flop.

Stag 7H 6.8 upper, Spyderco lower, kills pigs. Kills pigs best with head shots just like everything else I've killed pigs with. I've posted this picture before, but I like it, so here it is again. CH

Hogs I've shot that were the most fun were with a 222 Mag and 62 TSX's and a 35 Whelen with 250gr. cast softnosed bullets; both exited, but one was like killing with a pellet gun, the other had some serious smack. A 338 with FailSafes also goes into the smackdown category, but the 222 Mag killed just as quick, just not as much collateral.
The funniest was one shot with a 46 gr. cast softnose from a 22 Hornet....
Hell, a favorite hog gun is is too hard for me to pin down, when its prolly just what I feel like carrying.

On the topic of favorite hog guns, mine is a Blaser R-93 Tracker in 9.3x62. I have killed hogs with numerous calibers, and with a head shot, any of them will anchor them. However, even with marginal shot placement, the 9.3 will put them down fast.

Whatever gun I have handy. I mostly use a .223 or .243. I've never seen a boar big enough to stop a standard 130 grain cup-n-core bullet from a .270 with it's shoulder shield like some claim. It might not penetrate completely through the hog but it sure as heck is going to kill porky. Those shields dont seem to slow down broad heads to much. Hogs don't take much killing. The really big boars are definitely tougher but they sure don't rank for special boolits for me at least. YMMV.
And just because I treat them like the VERMIN that they are doesnt mean I don't want a good clean kill when I lay into them.

I like iron sighted lever actions in .45-70 or .30-30 for wild hogs. Both are good brush guns. Most wild hogs I have hunted stayed close to cover and the lever action is good for this kind of hunting.

This is my Hog Gun....Marlin 1895M in 450 Marlin completely Cerakoted the rifle as Marlin blued steel doesn't like the humid swamps here in the South..... shooting 300gr TSXs pushed by IMR 4227 with a Leupold 1x-4x 20mm...I mounted the scope in QR mounts and replaced the rear sight with a full buckhorn from an 1894 Cowboy for a better sight picture..........hoping to leave tomorrow to kill a few. I don't know that I have a favorite hog gun. I've shot them with just about everything imaginable over the years, including a multitude of centerfire rifles, handguns and muzzleloaders. The last hog I shot (one week ago) was the second in a row to fall to a single shot from my Ruger 77 Hawkeye stainless in 338 Fed. using 185-grain TSX. That particular rifle happens to really like copper ammo, unlike some rifles in my collection, and the use of copper ammo is now mandatory across much wild hog range in Calif. So, by default, I suppose you could say I now have a favorite "California hog" gun.

slickest rig i have used lately was a buddies 11-87 with a rifled barrel and red dot sight...
i have a young cousin that uses an AR in a .243... kinda goes against my grain, but it's a sweet shooting rig, anyways...
