The info I have: 3X9X40 has vari X written on it, serial number is 45514. Appears to be in good shape, has that purple hue of their older scopes. appears to be pre 1974.
Guy is asking 150.00
You guys have any thoughts??

BTW, this is a local sale. Not on the classifieds here, not trying to stir anything up just getting opinions.

That is a fair deal on an older Vari-X II, if the glass is in good shape.

He said it only had vari x on it, so I do not know I,II, or III. Serial number leads me to believe it is pre 1974. Kinda trying to find more info.

Some of the older Leupold scopes have reticles that move as you make adjustments. You can end up with the crosshairs shifted up, down, or to one side if you need a lot of adjustment to sight it in. You can find much newer models for $150 if you're willing to spend a little time watching for them.

That's kind of an old scope, if you are looking to compliment a certain rifle with an erra correct scope then go for it, otherwise... I guess honestly I'd pass at 150
like others have said, you are reaching into modern VX1 price... well... it should be easy to pick up a couple year old vx1 for 150-ish I'd think
Something clever here.

I agree... I bought a 4 power from that vintage ( or before) for $40.00..
got a 3 power from that vintage also, and the guy thought he was loading me as it had a broken reticle..
however, while he was telling his buddies about sticking some guy with a broken scope for $40.00, I was busy packing it up, shipping it up to Beaverton to Leupold, who told me it was too old to have parts available..
so they offered me a new 4 power, and I asked about a new 6 power instead.... and they countered with, do I mind if it had a German Number 4 reticle.... and I said NOT at ALL!
so they shipped me a new 6 power scope..
yeah that Beavis sure stuck it to me... probably used the money and went down and bought himself a cheap 3 x 9 Tasco at Bi Mart... and a 6 pack..
